anyone have a TAH?

Hi! Sounds like you could use one of these so I'm sending you one right now.

Here's a great place for you to go -- the Tell Your Hyst-Story forum. Here you'll find story after story which chronicles many of our members' actual hospital experiences. I know I became positively addicted to this portion of Hyster Sisters before my surgery. I just couldn't get enough of those stories!

For my part, I really was OK the day of surgery. I was pretty calm, not very hungry or thirsty, and I was just wanting to get things over with. I didn't have long to wait once I got prepped for surgery, and that helped, too.

If you have a pastor or another spiritual leader, would it be possible for he/she to be with you at the hospital on surgery day? That might also go a long way toward helping keep you as calm as possible.

Sending calming thoughts your way.

anyone have a TAH?

Hi Soprecious,
I can understand totally how you are feeling I had a TAH on Oct.25,2005...I was soooo scared I thought about cancelling my appt. over and over and almost got up off the table when i met the antestisiologists...i was terrified...but I knew I had to this as I was bleeding for the last year and was severly anemic...I did the versed sedative and had a spinal ...did not go to sleep...the sedative is great you don't remember anything...my surgery was expected to be 1 hour but ended up being 2 hours...of course I did'nt know this until after..I slept like a baby during surgery..lol.
It is normal to feel very anxious I know I DID and everything turned out just fine and I am starting my 3rd week of recovery and definetly would do it again..no regrets at all!
They did let me take a 5 mg. valium before i went to the hospital and i think that took the edge off a bit.
And i have been on 800 mg motrin since 5 days after my surgery for pain..no more hard stuff!
Well I wish you luck and you will do just fine ...you just tell yourself that you need to do this 4 you and before you know it friday will be gone and Saturday you will be on your way to recovery!
God Bless you and Big hugs from someone who was scared just like you!
Please feel free to private email me if you need comforting...Brenda

anyone have a TAH?

I had mine back in February. I had also had a few surgeries in the past, two were emergency no time to think about it and the one in between those was planned. I did worry about that one because we had a lot hope on that one. This one.. I was totally freaked, OMG, no sleep, crying - sobbing jags. Yup, it's a sign, it's a sign you're normal. Just think about what has brought you to this point that should help. I did find peace with my surgery days before it happened, I knew I had to. I was afraid of having the surgery with the state of mind that I had. I was scared of the pain, I was scared of dying, I was scared what if I had complicaitons, what if I had cancer. Make up your mind right now that you are going to take this one step at a time. Right now, you just have to make it to Friday. Then deal with what may happen ONLY IF it happens.

anyone have a TAH?

I just had my TAH 10/27...and nobody could of been more scared than me!!!!!! It was my first surgery ever...When I got up that morning I was still scared....They called me in right away for prep...I undressed into that lovely hospital wear...then they came in an explained everything...what was going to happen...They numbed my hand where the iv was gonna go...and put the iv in...I did not really feel it...After the anasteciologist came in so did the dr...about 25 minute before being taken to surgery ...they gave me a sedative...then a few minutes later they came in and said we are taking you to the operating room...I was thinking YIKES>>> they wheeled me down the hall...and the next thing I remember is them telling me they are taking me to my room...So since my surgery I can tell you that I feel really good...not really hurting at all...maybe a tinge here are there...And everything went very well...I definately had a positive experience...and a good one also...But I was scared to death for months until I finally went...But it really turned out not to be as bad as I thought or some people had experienced...Good Luck...

anyone have a TAH?

Hi SoPrescious:
I am currently recovering from a TAH done on Oct. 21. I too was very scared beforehand and do understand how you are feeling. It was my very first major surgery so I was a basket case. I asked my doctor was something to calm my nerves the night before so that I could get some rest. I would recommend that you get something from your doctor because it is important that you get some rest the night before your surgery. My surgery was pretty uneventful. I had general anesthesia and I do not really remember much about the first few hours after the surgery. My time in the recovery room was a blur. I had a few visitors in my room that afternoon that I kinda of remember but it was kinda of foggy. I had a few problems with nausea and a headache with my morphine drip. I had to stay in the hospital from Friday am through Tuesday afternoon. I would have got out on Monday afternoon but I was having difficulty taking solid foods until Tuesday am. My recovery has been pretty uneventful. My 2 week check is tommorrow so I hope all goes well. If you are a religious person like I am, I had to learn to put my entire trust and faith in God. I knew that He would be watching over all of my surgery and taking care of me through it all. Best wishes in your surgery and recovery. Take care and may God bless you.
I hope this helps you.
Carol.

anyone have a TAH?

Dear Soprecious,
I was sort of scared, as I'm sure we all were at the time. I placed everything in God's hands. I prayed a lot before the TAH...prayed for peace...for God to guide the doc and staff...for the mass to be benign...or if it was cancer, for God to help me accept it. I went into the hospital feeling very sure that the doctor knew what was best for me. I've learned through my life that I can't stress over things I have no control over. I knew that the surgery wasn't optional. The bleeding was horrible and the mass wasn't getting smaller. It was inevidable that the surgery had to be performed, so I accepted it and put it in God's hands.

In the hospital, I pretty much rested and accepted the pain meds whenever they were offered. When I talked to the doc the first time and he said that the biopsy was negative for cancer I was thrilled and knew that I did the right thing. I was there for two nights and all went well.

When I got home, the worst part for me was constipation. From what I've read on this site, that is par for the course. Be sure to have stool softeners and Gas-X purchased before you get home from the castle as you will probably need them! I'm 6 weeks post-op and still use the stool softeners and occasionally the Gas-X. Be sure to eat lots of fruits and veggies and keep a bottle of prune juice handy too. Get lots of rest and when you're up, walk, walk, and walk some more. It helps with the gas and with regaining your strength. At times, ice felt good on my belly, and other times it was heat. It all depends on your preference.

During recovery, this was my favorite pasttime. This site is WONDERFUL. These women are so supportive and informative. My friends are afraid that I'm going to replace them with my hystersisters! Do know that there are many women that are here for you.

Relax and know that it will be over soon and someday you can look back and ask yourself if it really was that bad.

Good luck and God bless you.
