3 days post hysterectomy: Itchy Vagina and Staples Burn

Hi All,

I am day three post op. My pain has been tolerable up until earlier today. I noticed a pulling burning sensation on my left side when I would get up or down from a sitting position or straighten to full standing. That burning wasn't there before and it's even during the time when I am on the strongest dose of pain killer. Is this normal? I have 17 staples and they all appear to be in tact. Also, the rim of my vaginal opening is itching like mad. I know this is TMI but it almost feels like the beginning of a yeast infection. I haven't put anything inside or used soap on it. I was told not to. I am not sure how good it got rinsed in my shower earlier today because I had to use a cup. Shower head was old and not the movable type and couldn't lift my legs or anything so rinsed with warm water as best as I could. Hubby went and bought me a new shower head today and installed it. Are these two things normal?

Re: Itchy Vagina and Staples Burn

The burning and pulling is probably from internal sutures. That kind of pain doesnt always respond to pain meds. I totally followed all the rules for longer than i was supposed to, and still ended up with a yeast infection anyway. Call your doc, if nothing else peace of mind.

Re: Itchy Vagina and Staples Burn

I had the same burning at my incision site, like under the skin and still do til this day and I am going on week 3 of recovery. My guess is that it is the severed nerves since my tummy is either numb or burning. My doc said those feelings should go away within 3-6 months for good.

Re: 3 days post hysterectomy: Itchy Vagina and Staples Burn

Yes, it feels like a pulling under the skin that burns extremely bad. Not really sure how to describe it other than it hurts like the dickens. I have found that keeping an ice pack on it at night really helps keep it numb. I keep a towel between my wound and the ice pack of course but it sitting on their all night while sleeping numbs the site and helps. Its when I forget to put the ice pack on that I rediscover extreme pain. My doc advised the ice pack and gave me one to use so I feel okay using it for now. As for my VJJ.. lol.. nothing I can do about that except when I take a shower let the shower head with hot water sit on it a minute and it helps with the itching some. Haven't tried any cremes yet. I am going to see the doc thursday and will ask about that then. I have also noticed bloody discharge more now that wasn't there all week. Delayed discharge? The nurses said to expect it. I know this is TMI but this entire site is TMI.. lol. That's why I love it. Real problems, real advise and no snickering or smart alec comments and loads of support.
