Surgery Questions
Good evening all! I have come up with a few questions and am hoping that you ladies can help me out.
1. If I will only be in the hospital for a day, what do I need to bring with me?
2. Are you completely put to sleep? Is your husband allowed in once you are done, or do you have to wait until you are awake?
Also, anything else you think I may need to know?

Re: Surgery Questions
Hi akrainey,
I took a robe for walking around the halls since they will get you up right away. I took slippers but they gave me slipper socks. I didn't bring a nightgown, figured I'd use theirs in case of bleeding.
If you can find out if they provide an abdominal binder (mine did) otherwise I would suggest having one with you. My pharmacy sold them. It really helped give support and made walking and moving so much easier right from the very first day.
Other than that, just toothbrush and paste, a little makeup and brush. I wore loose clothing in so they'd be good for going home too and slip on shoes.
Have a pillow in the car for your ride home to put under the seat belt. Then you should be good. My whole process went so much better than expected. Good luck to you.

Re: Surgery Questions
You need to ask your anesthesiologist your second question. There are a number of ways that you can be anesthetized and you can discuss the pros and cons of each with your doctor. My husband was not allowed to see me until I was in a hospital room. They usually don't allow family members in the recover area (PACU) as there are all kinds of people waking up and they can't guaranty privacy. I had a 3 night stay.

Re: Surgery Questions
I had a 1 night stay. I brought my robe and slippers for when I went walking. I just wore their gown and no undies when I was in bed. Bring lip balm for sure!!
Hubby was not able to see me until I went to my room. They were there waiting for me when I got there. (Hubby and my mom) I was put all the way to sleep.
They gave me an abdominal binder and that was a lifesaver. Definitely ask for one! I also agree about the pillow. Loved my pillow!

Re: Surgery Questions
My DH was able to see me briefly in the recovery room once I gave them the ok (I made him wait a little extra time because in was pretty groggy at first). Then he went up to my room to wait for me and so was there when I arrived from recovery.

Re: Surgery Questions
I am 41, and very new to this site. My surgery is scheduled for June 6th. However a week ago, I had a diagnostic laparoscopy surgery. I wasn't able to see my husband until after I woke up from the surgery. I have to say my nurse was FANTASTIC! She had also had endometriosis and a complete hysterectomy. She was filling in me in on what the doctor discovered and shared her story with me. Women are absolutely amazing! I am so thankful that they're so willing to share their stories. It helped me so much to have such a caring and wonderful nurse in the recovery room.
I do agree with the lip balm. I had a tube in my throat during my "discovery" surgery and my lips were very dry. I am amazed at how quickly I'm healing from the laparoscopy though. I'm going in for my post-op today to get more information on my up-coming surgery. Hang in there. I love this site and we definitely all have to stick together!!!

Re: Surgery Questions
First-Good luck to you! I was put totally to sleep and didn't see my D.H till I came to my room. I wore the hospital gown since i was only there one night. I did take my own slippers and robe to walk the halls. Agree with the lip balm. I had a tube down my throat too. My D.H went out and got me some lifesavers too and they were wonderful to suck on. Other than that I just took my hair brush and toothbrush and toothpaste.

Re: Surgery Questions
I only spent 10 hours at the hospital, and three of those were in surgery. I had packed a robe and such, but it never left the car. I was never in a "room" and my family was allowed to be with me in pre-op and post-op. (Along with 40 some other patients and their families). So once again, lots of variation. I'm with an HMO.

Re: Surgery Questions
Funny, I was told not to bring anything with me except the (loose) clothing I would be wearing home. But, when I asked to get up and walk the nurse asked where my robe was. She provided me with another gown to wear backwards and cover my backside. I did, however, bring my own slippers because I didn't want to get stuck with paying $13 for a pair of crappy slipper socks like I did during a previous hospitalization.
A small pillow is a must for the drive home. Someone already suggested a pillow pet. There is a thread about this as well. I wish I had read it before my surgery. I've been wanting a ladybug pillow pet and that would have been the perfect excuse to buy one. You'll also want a pillow to hold to your stomach when you cough, laugh, sneeze, etc.
My hubby and stepmom weren't allowed to see me until I was awake and in my room, but the nurses and doctor kept them updated all through the procedure and recovery.
Oh, and I also brought some panties and pads to put on immediately once I was in the room. You may or may not have bleeding or discharge, but it would be nice to have these just in case.
