What if anything is moving into the empty space after hysterectomy?

Good afternoon. I have what might be a couple of silly questions. I just had a total hysterectomy. Do I just have a "dead end" now or perhaps a cul-de-sac? Is anything in my abdomen going to move in to fill in the empty space? Or is it going to remain just an empty space? Are my intestines or bladder going to spread out now?

I have moved your question here to the Post Op forum so other members will be able to answer your questions -- common ones I might add! We even have some articles on them!

First, when the complete uterus is removed, a vaginal cuff is created to seal the area. You can read more here: Vaginal Cuff after Hysterectomy | What Is It?

Second, a normal uterus is only about the size of your fist, so there really isn't much room that needs filled. Everything in the area, mostly your intestines, simply relax a bit so they aren't so squished. Here's an article that explains more: What Takes the Uterus' Place after Hysterectomy?

This may sound silly but the doctor likened my abdomen to a bowl of spaghetti and meatballs. My intestines being the spaghetti part and my uterus a meatball. If you remove a meatball the spaghetti fills in the void. Not exactly scientific but easy to visualize...lol

We use that same illustration in our article as it works very well when explaining what happens!
