Cervical dysplasia - Should I do it?

I am 33. I have been having cervial issues for 2 years. I was diagnosed with cervical dysplasia and my doc did a LEEP in 2008. All seemed to be okay, then I lost 50lbs, and suddenly for the last 4 months my cycle has become very heavy for 2-3 days and painful for the entire week. Now, this is new because I am on the pill and normally my cycle lasts 2-3 days and extremely light. So, the doc did an ultra sound and didn't find much. Did a pelvic exam, said that my cervix still looked okay, but recommended a hysterectomy. She said I could do the ablation, but feels that I am in the 10% that it would not "work" for. My husband does not support the hysterectomy because of complications his ex-wife had 13yrs ago and because of the time I will be off of work...

Any words of wisdom or opinions about whether or not this surgery should take place??

Re: Should I do it?

You're pretty young and a hysterectomy is serious surgery. If it was me I would get a second opinion. Sometimes when you're so young, insurance won't pay until you've exhausted all types of treatments.

Re: Cervical dysplasia - Should I do it?

You didn't elaborate on the extent of the cervical dysplasia. Are you HPV positive? Low grade or high grade dysplasia? Were your margins clear on your LEEP?

I was diagnosed with dysplasia at 28. I'm now 33. If you are past having children and have persistent dysplasia - I can guarantee having a simple hysterectomy is thousands times better than a radical hysterectomy and/or cancer treatment.

Re: Cervical dysplasia - Should I do it?

OMG, I feel like an idiot because I don't know the answer to most of that. I was not HPV positive. They did a biopsy, said that there were pre-cancerous cells and that a LEEP was necessary. Also, my cervix was such that anytime she barely even touched my cervix it would bleed so bad that she couldn't hardly get the exam done. So, she did the LEEP and things had been good until 4 months ago.

She said my cervix still looks good but that I shouldn't be bleeding like this and having the amount of pain that I am having during my monthly cycle since I am on the pill.

She asked several times if I was done having children and I assured her yes. I have one, he is my baby and I don't want anymore and my husband and son agree that our family is complete. So, I told her yes and she recommended the hysterectomy.

She said why deal with any more issues and a possible cancer down the road....

Seeing it as always a last option, I have just been scared about having the hysterectomy. I have heard good and bad stories, so I found this site, hoping for some comfort and info

Re: Cervical dysplasia - Should I do it?

Ask your doctor what the pathology report says. It should say what grade of dysplasia you had. Also, the pathology reports from the LEEPS should list if the margins were clear.

Granted I don't have your medical history, and I certainly don't want to alarm you - but my cervix looked fine as well, and bled when touched. My Gynecology Oncologist said my cancer infiltrated my cervix endophytically, which prevented outward signs of any issues.

Find out what your path says and I can point you in a few directions for further reading.

Thank you so much, I will ask. They are supposed to call me tomorrow, so I will ask her then. Thank you
