Some of it can depend on what kind of surgery you are having. Some members with bladder and colon repairs may have lifelong lifting limits.
I only had a hysterectomy but I had one dr. say "why do you want to lift heavy things", it puts stress on the area and can cause prolapse.
However in general lifting restrictions are in place for at least your initial recovery (6-8 wks) and then over time you build back up but slowly.

Re: question about lifting things
I know that for me the doctor put restrictions on me lifting anything for six weeks. Now he says I can lift more but he still wouldn't advise me to lift anything over 40-50 pounds. It takes time to heal and he wants to make sure everything has healed. I have a feeling that at some point all the restrictions will be lifted.

Re: question about lifting things
I had A & P repairs along with my TVH (and a bladder sling, just for fun, LOL), and my doc said not more than 20 lbs. It's all good for me, the most I ever lift anyway anymore is the dog food. So, some folks have "permanent" lifting restrictions, but like Taurus lady said, it probably depends on the surgery.
