persistent low blood pressure

My blood pressure is always low but since the hyst 8 days ago I am lower than ever. In the hospital I was around 84/45 and similar, and I lost a huge amount of blood but no transfusion because my doc knew I didn't want one and I'd bounced back from severe anemia so often.

Since I've been home from the hospital I am dizzy & weak. Can't get my blood pressure up. Today I had a nurse friend measure it. It was just 70/41.

I called the doctor's office & spoke to the nurse about something else, and asked her about the blood pressure. She said that is very low but not to worry, just be extra careful when showering, etc not to pass out and hit my head.

I'm just wondering besides eating salt has anyone got hints about how to handle it. Anyone else dealt with it successfully? I know it may not be dangerous but it's so exhausting when combined with the blood loss. I'd love any hints.

Thanks

designergal, ARE you using more salt? If not, that might help. I too tend to run low blood pressures, and while in the hospital a few nurses checked it twice in a row because they couldn't believe what they were seeing. I think doctors tend not to worry if low blood pressure is typical for the patient, as it is for us. More than likely when I came home it was still on the low side but since I'm an avid salt user eventually it stabilized--maybe salting everything for now might work for you. I also think that the sooner you get back to eating normally and sufficiently the better you will feel.

Talk to your gp about salt--as I understand it, people with low bp can shift into hbp. I know I was always a little low before it went up.

As for salt, you coulda hadda V8!! No honestly--have you read the salt content on those????

You're right about that Arlynn, I've known several women who had low bp's all their life and upon hitting menopause became hypertensive, so we all have to be careful with salt now--plus, salt leeches calcium from your bones, something else none of us here need! I just thought designergal could use lots of salt temporarily, but as it turns out I read another post she wrote elsewhere on this site and she's already doing that. V8 is a great way to get that salt in now though, as are most canned products, especially soups!

Hi,

My bp has all along been marginally low. So far, I find eating dates (2-3 at most per time because of high sugar content) and having easy to digest, nutritious food help. Dates are known in Chinese medicine for helping in blood circulation.

By all means avoid food like celery if you have low blood pressure because they can definitely knock us out.

Best wishes,
