Day 5 and going for walks?

I feel great, besides the residual bloating. My incision site hasn't had a issue today.
I walked out in front of my house for a few minutes to get the hell off my butt and to get some not so fresh Texas air.

I'm wondering, can I go for longer walks?

I had my husband take me to get a pedicure just so I could get out of the house with out exerting anything.

I want a glass of wine, or a good meal at a restaurant.

I know I had major surgery, but I'm listening to my body and feel like I can do some of the light normal activities, like walking down the street or sitting at a restaurant.

Is it too soon?

Re: Day 5 and going for walks?

Judging from my own experience . . . at 5 days I was slowly walking the block with my husband to pick up the mail, as well as walking around my house, back yard, and driveway. I just couldn't stand being stuck in bed all day long at that point. In between my short walks I would rest on the couch for an hour or two. The one thing I had a problem with was sitting upright in a chair for any length of time, so going to a restaurant was not for me. I had my first glass of wine the 2nd night home from the hospital, as I wasn't taking any narcotics. It was heavenly!

If you feel your body is ready, give it a try.

Re: Day 5 and going for walks?

I was taking short walks starting on day 2--couldn't on day one b/c I had a spinal and couldn't feel my legs.

I walked around our block, which is .3 miles as soon as I got home from the hospital. I tried to do this 3 times/day. On day 4 I walked a very slow 1.3 miles with dh. I walked really slow the first 3 weeks, and the first week always walked with dh, or after that if it was anything longer than around the block. The idea being that if at some point I hit the wall, I could stop and wait while he went to get the car.

Luckily, that did not happen. Although a couple of times we started a walk and not too far in, I could tell my body was saying "no" so we just turned around and went home. I am at 4 weeks today, and try to take 2 walks a day totalling 2-4 miles between the two. I am walking reasonably briskly, but not power walking.

My dr. told me I could walk as much post op as I could tolerate. Just remember to listen to your body. During a normal (non post-op) walk, I would push myself if I felt a little tired or sluggish. Now, however, I do not push myself at all and will not for several more weeks or until my dr. gives the green light.

Re: Day 5 and going for walks?

I was taking small walk 4 times a day. As long as you go slow & stay on pretty even ground you should be fine. Walking was the "only" thing that I did other than rest.

Re: Day 5 and going for walks?

Thank you. I went for a walk to the end of my block and back. I went slow, felt like a old lady and took my phone just in case.
It was nice to get out (even though its so humid), I wanted to stay out, but by the time I got back to my house, I knew I had enough.

I am a workhorse and have a really hard time doing nothing. I almost think for me, it would make my healing slower.

Re: Day 5 and going for walks?

Hi Ladies,

I'm glad I'm not the only one who simply cannot sit on her butt! I began walking the day after my TAH/BSO...up the hospital hallway and back. When I came home bf and I walked to the end of the driveway or around the yard, and we went to the mall 9 days post op. The biggest danger in public places is being accidentally bumped or hit by someone...so we stayed out of crowded places.

I am 13 days post op, and am taking one or two short walks as tolerated in addition to MINOR housework (dishes, folding laundry, etc)...I was extremely active pre op (zumba and hiking, walking, or running every day) so the slow pace gets to me sometimes, but I want to heal quickly so better safe than sorry

And wine is always medicinal...

Best Wishes,

Kim

Re: Day 5 and going for walks?

I started walking in the hospital the day after my operation. I'm 1 week post op and did a block last night. I'm going to try for a bit more today and my hubby is going to take me out to lunch. It is so wonderful not to be in pain.
I do be careful and when my body says enough...I listen!

Re: Day 5 and going for walks?

My Doc said I could do whatever felt good, the caveat is that you often don't realise your have overdone until you feel lousy way AFTER the overdoing.

On day 2 I took 4 slow walks totally 1 mi, then I rested for a couple of days. On day 7 I drove 3 hours each way for a check up, then I was sick in bed for a week.
Slowly increase your activities and see how you feel, just do it slowly

Re: Day 5 and going for walks?

Yea! I feel good today. I was a little off last night, but glad it was just temporary.

Today going out to lunch, hopefully I'll be ok sitting upright.

Tonight going to walk a little again

I may even ask my friend to take me to the bookstore so I can pick up a magazine
