future dr visits

i'm almost 8 wk post-op & see my dr on friday, 10/1. i feel confused - do you need to keep seeing a gyn once everything is gone? i hear mixed comments on this. I had a BSO last year. also, how do you go about getting a copy of the surgical report? do you ask the dr or the hospital for it? i had the da vinci hysterectomy and ended up in the OR for over 6 hrs so I just want to know what went on. i was loaded with fibroids. am i wrong for wanting to know?

Re: future dr visits

Ask your doctor for a copy of the sugical report, it's easier than trying to get information from the hospital (in Australia at least). Write yourself a list of questions you want to ask and make sure you jot down the answer, otherwise you'll be thinking of the next question and you'll forget what he or she has said. You'll kick yourself later if you hold back on asking, and remember they've heard it all before so nothing you ask will shock them.
All the best for Friday.

Re: future dr visits

My doctor said yes, you still need a yearly exam. They test the vaginal tissue cells & you want your breast exam. They still check your pelvic area so I will be going once a year. You can get your report from both the doctor & the hospital. I still need to get the one from the hospital so I can compare it to the one from the doctor. Best wishes.

Re: future dr visits

You just need to call the doctor's office and request a copy of your surgical report (the hospital will charge you for it...don't think the doctor's office will).

I asked my doctor if I still need to come see him, and he said yes. He told me to schedule my annual exam for 6 months from now. (I'm 5 weeks, 1 day post-op)

Hope that helps!

Re: future dr visits

If you still have a cervix, they will still do a pap test.

Re: future dr visits

Even without a cervix you will still need a vaginal vault smear, but the time frame of how often, will depend on your Dr. I agree with everyone, make sure all of your questions are written down before hand. and always ask for a copy of all procedures, exams and biopsies for your own records. Good luck with your apt.!!

Re: future dr visits

No one mentioned he ovaries (if kept) they are still a source of cysts and pain and even cancer so yes. My doctor said once a year for normal testing.
