Can't do a TVH...& still waiting on date

Well all, it has been one of those days.
I arrived surprisingly unnervous to my DR's office bright and early this morning for a pelvic exam to decide whether or not I could have a TVH. After digging for gold and feeling my backbone through my stomach, it was pronounce that I am too "short and narrow" for a vaginal hysterectomy.
I am sooo disappointed, and that is being nice about it! To top it all off, he couldn't give me a date, some woman has to schedule it b/c he is having another DR help him and she won't be in until Monday.
So.....here's my question.....Has anyone else experienced this? He said my uterus is extremely small, and my vaginal canal was too narrow to be able to pull my uterus through, and on top of all that, he said my cervix was too thin! I am so confused.
Dr & myself assumed since I had twins vaginally (although premature) and another normal delivery that I would be able to have this done. Now I wish he would have never discussed that option...I'm so upset....
I have extreme problems w/ pain meds. Now I am even more scared that I will be in pain!
Please someone help me and explain this if they know anything about it.......now I have to find out all I can about abdominal surgery!

TAH to be scheduled for cervical cancer & HPV

I'm awfully sorry that you were disappointed yesterday, ((( Cricket ))).

I know it's alot easier for me to say it than it is to accept it, but maybe it'll help if you remember that your doctor is planning to do the surgery that is the safest and best for you, with your individual body and your individual needs.

Several sister's doctors have had to change from a planned TVH to an abdominal surgery at the last minute - this way, you do know in advance, and can prepare yourself a little bit better than if it had been a total surprise.

Please talk with your doctor about your reactions to pain meds - there may be some newer drugs available now that you will be able to tolerate better.

You'll be in my thoughts and prayers for a successful surgery and uneventful recovery. Please be sure to add your surgery date to your profile when you find out when it will be.

Gee Cricket, I'm sorry that you're not going to have the TVH. I'm scheduled for one also, and I guess I'll find out for sure if it's possible at my preop. My MD seemed pretty sure and that's all he's talked about to me...no mention of having to possibly have a TAH. But you definitely want to have the procedure that will offer you the best solution to your problems, and the one that you will recover the best from with the least problems. At least you found out now instead of suffering with endless complications because a MD was too stubborn (or too sure of himself) to change his game plan.

I had hoped to have a TVH too, but couldn't.
to be perfectly honest about the pain from a TAH, --- in my case it really was not very bad.

When I woke up after surgery (I don't recall being in the recovery room, I only really woke up in my own room) I felt nauseaus and a bit of pain, but I was immediately hooked up to some IV and went back to sleep --- later when I woke up and stayed awake, the pain was like deep menstrual cramps, uncomfortable but certainly bearable.
Then, after 24 hours I was taken off the IV and never took anything other than Tylenol extra strength-- and even then that was more for headaches than abdominal pain.

I hope you are as fortunate with any post-surgery pain.

sorry to hear your delima. I to was told that I was unable to hve a TVH, but the reason given was never having children, something to do with a vagianl birth. I decided to get a second opinion from another physcian in the same practice and found out that I was a candidate for the LSH. I sure am glad that I saw this other physician!!! It might be worth your time to ask about the LSH, while there are still not many physicians offering this procedure it was a god send for me.

So sorry to hear that you can't have a TVH. I'm unable to have one too, but I've never had children. I'm surprised that you can't given you have had children. I guess I had thought everyone who had children would be "loose" as my dr put it. I know the disappointment that you feel. If I could have had a TVH, I'd have been on the road to recovery by now. But having to do a TAH with a VERTICAL incision...ugh...I'm very nervous and having second thoughts. Okay, maybe third and fourth thoughts... "maybe my problems aren't that bad"... "I can survive another (?) years."

Hang in there. I know that the disappointment adds frustration, but you have to evaluate whether or not the TAH is worth it. Read the posts, as many as you can. These Ladies in Waiting and Pricesses are wonderful. It's so nice to login and KNOW that these ladies know what it means to "face the hard decisions".
