second opinion

Good Morning,
I have been encouraged by several people to get a second opinion, I am scheduled for surgery on 5/31.
My husband and I were surfing the net the other night and found
a DR in PA, who with a breif email of my history said it does sound like I have adenomyosis. He said he can help me without a Hyster.
I have since talked to him on the phone, he has requested my
ultra sound results and the dr's report and pathology results.

I have his name and he practices out of brynmawr PA.
Has anyone ever heard of another procedure for adenomyosis.
Everything I have read the only thing that cures this is a Hyster.
Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.
Adrian

Hi, Adrian! As far as I know, there is no other treatment besides a hyst that will "cure" adeno. It is similar to endo but it is burrowed deep into the muscle walls of the uterus. I would be cautious about being treated long-distance via phone and computer. If it was me, I would want to have my dr close to me and available for immediate treatment if needed. It also is advisable to check a doctor's credentials, making sure he is board-certified in ObGyn, and also preferably getting a referral from a trusted dr or at least a knowledgable friend. If you are questioning having your hyst, I would suggest getting a second opinion from another dr in your area who can examine you. Your health is so important that you shouldn't trust just anyone to treat you! s and best wishes!

I found this DR on one of the links on this web site.
His name is Dr. *********. He said once he reviews my report
he will refer me to a DR in my area. But with your experience
you have never heard of any other treatments? I know and trust my local dr very much and feel like I am going behind his back.
I know this is my decision and my body and I am trying to my
the best educated decision I can. I thank you for your help
and input. I'm just so scared

Hi Adrian

I am not familiar with any other procedures for adeno. I didn't even know I had it until after my surgery.
I think we would all like to find an alternative to the surgery when we realize we have to have it. No one wants to face major surgery if they can avoid it.
I would like to second the advice given to you by Ruthie. Please check out his credentials and ask him for referrals of patients who have been cured by his "methods." The world of alternative medicine is quite vast. Unfortunately it is difficult to separate what works from what doesn't. Please don't invest alot of time or money or get your hopes up prematurely.
Check him out and who he refers you to thoroughly. Ask for a free consult and references, both his and his patients.
Please don't misunderstand me. I think there are many alternative practices that can help with some health issues. But I would proceed with caution in this situation. I think if something cheap and easy worked that the insurance companies would be pushing it on us and our doctors.
I think you can also legitimately discuss this new information with your own doctor whom you trust. You are not going behind his back you are being an informed health advocate for yourself.
Here is a link to Quack Watch too.

Good luck and stay vigilient.

Just to add my , I would be very wary of sending my medical records to anyone, especially someone I found on the Internet! It could be a 15-year-old kid for all you can tell! Those are confidential records and unless I knew the doctor and his credentials, I wouldn't just send them off without a question.

You might want to do more research into adeno and find out what if any other treatments are available.

Anyway, best wishes and I hope you find your answers.

My doctor recently told me that I most likely had adeno (9-wk size uterus found at ultrasound). He said that adeno can stay the same or get worse (larger uterus) but does not get better (smaller uterus) on its own. The options he presented to me were: 1) the pill - would regulate bleeding but not shrink uterus, 2) thermal ablation procedure (he described this as "burning the lining of the uterus off with balloon full of very hot water"), or 3) a hyst (he said this was the most "linear, guaranteed" solution.

I am scheduled for the hyst on May 21st. The thermal ablation sounded a little too uncontrolled for me. Doc said it does work a lot of the time though and that periods go away completely for a while.

Thought I'd pass along my experience. Hope it helps!

Adrian,

You might want to check out the Alternatives board here at hystersisters and see what some of the ladies posting there have to say about alternative treatments for adeno.

Good luck!
