Upcoming hysterectomy 2/27: One week to go and scared!

I'm one week out from surgery and the nerves are so overwhelming. I am absolutely terrified of the surgery. I have 3 young children and I just can't help but think the worse! Any helpful words of encouragement?

Re: One week to go and scared!

Sweetie, I know how scary this is, I have been in your shoes before and it isn't as bad as it sounds, you will be fine. You can ask your dr for some medicine for the anxiety before surgery to help calm your nerves, it will help you. I am a wife and a mother, I know exactly what you are going through and while you will be in some pain, I am not going to lie about that, whatever the cause of the hyst, you will probably feel 100% better. You've got this and with a great support system, YOU WILL GET THROUGH THIS! I wish I had more words of encouragement here but you have a lot of women here that will help you get through this

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 2/27: One week to go and scared!

I had a TAH on January 10th 2017, I'm in the UK. I'm 48 and have a 14 year old son. I had to have the op for severe bleeding due to massive fibroids. Before the op I had never had any type of surgery before. I was absolutely TERRIFIED. Probably like you are now. It's all I could think about. But what I will tell you is that I worried unnecessarily. It wasn't even a quarter as bad as I thought it would be. What exactly is it that you are most afraid of? I was scared of being put to sleep, and of waking up in bad pain and not being fully aware of where I was. I was out like a light before I knew what was happening and I awoke in hardly any pain. Please feel free to ask me anything that might be scaring you. X

I'm terrified of not waking up! Or something going terribly wrong and not waking up. I'm already an anxious person so my mind is running rampant. Thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement. I've had surgery before, even had 3 c-sections. But this is scarier for me for some reason.

I was scared of not waking up. In fact my first words to the lovely nurse who came to me in the recovery ward was 'I made it, I didn't die'. I was also scared that I'd wake up while they operating and then that when I did wake up, I'd be in a lot of pain. None of these things actually happened. I was worrying for nothing. Want to know what the worst part of this has been? The trapped wind. And that is the absolute truth. Take mint tea bags in hospital with you they help move the wind. I'm still drinking it now 6 weeks on!
