pathology & operating notes

Had to stop by the doc's to get a suture removed that was accidently left behind and decided to ask for a copy of my operating room notes and pathology report. I haven't seen the doc since she signed off on this, but from what I am reading, I feel better about having the hysterectomy and unexpected removal of my only remaining ovary. Seems there were all kinds of cysts on my ovary and tube, also growths in my cervix. I will be asking her lots of questions when I go back for post op on the 12th. Also, pre-cancerous conditions in the cervix. Glad I made this decision, even though it's been hard.

Re: pathology & operating notes

It's great you got this BEFORE your 6 week post-op appointment so you have time to formulate the questions.

Re: pathology & operating notes

Hey GL,

I had the same experience, when I went back for my 4 week I asked for my op/path notes....the path indicated cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade I....this wasn't why I had the TAH/BSO but I feel even better about my decision!

Re: pathology & operating notes

Is the op/path report something that the dr. should have if I asked for it? I'd love to see what mine says. I've asked a few times about the fibroids but the question was always overshadowed by the ovarian cyst issue. I just can't believe it was just the cyst that was causing the distention in my abdomen.

Re: pathology & operating notes

Cathy, you have the right to a copy of your pathology and surgical reports - any of your medical records, really.

I had my hysterectomy thinking I only had fibroids. Boy, was I surprised at what all was actually in there!!!! I am soooo glad that I had this hysterectomy and also had my cervix removed as it had major problems, as well. Now, I have no doubt that I did the right thing.

Re: pathology & operating notes

Catarina - you can obtain the surgical and pathology report either from your doctor or your hospital's medical records department (there may be a fee involved if you get it from the hospital...).

I read my surg and path report, and was so mortified, I ended up apologizing to my doctor at my six week checkup for waiting so long to have the procedure done! Absolutely, without a doubt, the hysterectomy was the right decision for me. My doctor knew it; unfortunately, he had a ways to go before he was able to convince me...poor man...
