Miserable, don't know what to do

Hello,
I wanted to introduce myself and give my story. I have been reading posts for several days. I found this forum about a year ago when I first started with some treatment.
I am 34, always ha heavy painful periods. Had problems getting pregnant but was able to have 2 healthy boys following some minor infertity treatment and lots of prayer. Pain and periods improved after pregnancies but always gradually worsened.
Last year I was diagnosed with diverticulitis and found to be extremely iron deficient and anemic. When investigating they realized at least part to blame was heavy periods. Pelvic ultrasound showed large polyp and very thickened endometrium. I had a D&C, hysteroscopy and the polyp removed. Turned out to be multiple polyps. I was then put on progesterone days 1-10 of cycle. 2 months later ha horrible bleeding and pain. Was increased to daily progesterone, for about 6 months periods were lighter and less painful but still present.
In December I bled 14 days and had moderate discomfort. Last week I had the heaviest period I've had in years accompanied by large multiple clots and pain so severe I couldn't function. I had an ultrasound yesterday and an appointment in 2 weeks.
Dr. Has been wanting to try Mirena and I'm just not sure about going through it and having to wait while in misery to see if it works. Has anyone had luck with it? I'm thinking if the oral progesterone hasn't worked I don't have much faith in it. I know ablation is also an option but she mention she thought I could have adenomyosis and I've read ablation doesn't fix that? I'm just an emotional wreck thinking about a hysterectomy but at the same time I am tired of being in pain and having iron infusions part because of the heavy periods.
Any input would be appreciated. I will continue reading threads on here.
Thanks so much!

Re: Miserable, don't know what to do

I have severe adenomyosis and I had the Mirena put in October of 2014. It has helped a lot but the pain has come back more and more every time. It's a bandaid fix, it doesn't treat the problem, it just covers it up. I'm still having long periods but they are much lighter and much smaller clots. My first cycle after I had Mirena was 95% less pain. That's dropping by about 3% with each cycle. It's definitely worth a try. I do not regret it at all and I don't want it removed until I have something more permanent done.

How bad was the insertion? I have heard horror stories.

Miserable, don't know what to do

Have you researched the iron you are getting via the infusions? I have read time and time again of these infusions causing problems of excessive bleeding and thickened linings because you are getting far more iron than your body is capable of absorbing. You might want to research what you are being infused with as there might be better options. I took Floradix when I was anemic. Many cereals are enriched with iron too. If it were me I would try to build my iron naturally vs. taking those infusions.

Re: Miserable, don't know what to do

Never really thought about the iron causing the buid up but even though I had the infusions my iron stores are still nonexistent. Hgb&Hct have improved some but iron is still low. I'm kind of in a different spot with the iron because I don't absorb oral or food based even well. The GI DR thinks it's from my extensive diverticular disease.

You are so right the pain can be hard to differentiate. Aim always telling my husband that when he asks what's causing the pain. A high fever is usually my tell take sign of a diverticulitis flare versus uterine and usually I can tell it's uterine when I'm having large clots and heavy bleeding.
I actually just had an ultrasound last week. The tech told me it did look like a polyp was back but not as large as before. So I guess I'll see the full results at my appointment.

Re: Miserable, don't know what to do

Iron can be hard to absorb. I have read iron supplements are best absorbed if taken with Vitamin C, apparently they share a synergistic, complimentary relationship.

I drank children's blend Floradix straight from the bottle ( was in my purse) several times a day and ate the enriched cereals and my number went from 5.5 to 7 making it so I did not need a blood transfusion. I was also advised to munch on Flintstone vitamins too but I never did this but I have read of women upping their iron stores in doing so. Maybe children's vitamins would be easier on your tummy.

You might want to check out what you are being infused with to ensure it is helping and not hurting. I read a metallic taste in the mouth can indicate too much and not the right type. There is lots of info under Hematology search. I'm super careful to research anything and everything doctors recommend as I have become a bit of a skeptic after my fibroid tumor debacle.

I was misdiagnosed for 3 years. Then when a teensy fibroid was FINALLY discovered they wanted to do a complete hysterectomy. I said no and the fibroid was ignored and allowed to languish and grow huge. I was told I had one option: hysterectomy. I could not wrap my head around this even though I was miserable and my body deformed. Turns out there were many other options but my doctor did not perform them so I was not appropriately advised. Later he said he would have told me had I been younger. I was an ancient 46 year old. I know my situation is not yours but had my iron level not been so low I think I would have been able to think straight and address my problems sooner.

I eventually had UFE which worked out great. I know polyps can bleed like no tomorrow and that these are easily removed with hysteroscopy.

Re: Miserable, don't know what to do

Just an update, I had my appt and ultrasound. Ultrasound was unremarkable , lining normal at 3mm much better than before D&C last year. However I'm still bleeding and having unexplained pain:/
She said she would normally try an ablation but I have PCOS and it's contraindicated. She is also hesitant although willing to do hysterectomy. Hesitant mainly due to the fact I have diverticulosis and have had several diverticulitis episodes. So what did we so? She put me on Nuvaring. So far a week of not bleeding but having a killer headache and mild to moderate constant cramping. Mirena is next step, I just don't feel comfortable with it, afraid I'll be stuck with it if it doesn't work or makes things worse. At least the ring I can remove
So I guess it's wait and see for awhile . I did have hematology appt and my iron is almost nonexistent again and hemoglobin is dropping. So if I have another bleed I may be in trouble.
Thanks for all the support.

Miserable, don't know what to do

I had the Mirena for 10 years total, no problems and I loved it.
If that's worth anything to you, best wishes.
