Re: When did starting bending down???
I bent to change my socks in the hospital, but not much once I got home, I tried to be careful especially the first 4weeks. Definitely no reaching above my head except when I wasn't thinking and lifted the vacuum cleaner really high. Definitely don't do that!

Re: When did starting bending down???
I had a TAH on 4/24...I just slowly started bending and reaching. I started by picking things up with my toes and lifting them about a foot off the ground and then reaching for them. Same with putting on socks/shoes...pulled my legs partway to my hands then reached a little to get it. It was probably around week two where I could reach above my head and get socks and shoes on myself! I still bend and reach VERY slowly and today I am three weeks post op. I just try to do a little more each day. From reading here...everyone is different so I just try to do small things each day without causing excruciating pain, just a little pulling feeling. Wishing you a speedy and non-eventful recovery!! Hugs and good luck!

Re: When did starting bending down???
By the way, it was just two days ago that I can reach all the way to the floor and pick up my nine pound puppy. When I first started bending down I couldn't get the heavy pans out from under the stove. I could bend down there but it hurt too much to lift them up!! : )

Re: When did starting bending down???
Thank you ladies for your responses!!! Just was wondering, I am able to reach a little but I think I am afraid that I will hurt something, and therfore don't reach too high! I will continue to take things slow and steady!!

Re: When did starting bending down???
I think you are doing great! Iam just trying to do what feels right for me. Today is the first day I drove. I see some people are walking two miles a day by now, but there is no way I could do that! I am just trying to slowly increase the things that I do. I'm with you! I don't want to hurt anything! We only get one chance at this healing thing! I try not compare myself to others. I feel like I am not the slowest to do things and I'm not out in front either. And I am ok with that!! Take care and happy healing!

Re: When did starting bending down???
I'm on week 4, and still way to scared to even try bending down. I've been able to lift up my arm to get things for a few weeks now, but I still can't stretch beyond what my arm naturally lifts to, or stand on my toes.
I am just trying to go real slowly with things because I am paranoid about causing internal damage!

Re: When did starting bending down???
I was wondering about the bending down too. I also do the pick up with toes and bend leg at knee to get stuff. I didn't realize lifting the arms would create a problem. I guess I haven't tried that yet. My nurse educator told my husband I couldn't vacuum for a year (of course, he replied I don't do that now--our vacuum is too heavy and has to be pulled).

Re: When did starting bending down???
Hmm, I've been bending for a week and a half. My doctor said I could if it doesn't cause pain and if I was not lifting anything over 5 pounds.

Re: When did starting bending down???
I didn't know we weren't supposed to bend or reach. Dr. didn't mention anything, except not lifting anything over a carton of milk for a few weeks. I tried bending the day I got home and it hurt, so didn't anymore - just reach with toes. I've reached to get a glass out of cupboard several times - hasn't bothered me.
