3 weeks post hysterectomy: Abdominal incision odor

3 weeks post op....total abdominal hysterectomy.

2 week post op appointment with doc was fine. Cleared to drive, incision looked good.

Noticed incision odor two days ago (like stinky cheese/toe jam smell). Gross, I know!

My incision doesn't feel sore, red or swollen at all. The incision is located below my stomach fat.....so my belly is always resting on top of the incision.

Is this normal? Any ideas of how to keep it cleaner? Should I be concerned?

Sounds like you could have a yeast infection. This happens when it gets too moist. I would get it checked out by a doctor. In the mean time, make that it it dry at all times.

Mine had a smell, which was just from being too nervous to clean it well. I was told to dab it with a wet soapy washcloth, let water run over it to rinse and then pat dry. Once I started doing that each morning in the shower, it went right away.

I had a similar issue. I had the doctor confirm that it was not an infection. He had me wash the area gently with mild soap daily and dry the area with a blow dryer on the lowest setting. He also recommended using Zeasorb powder to make sure the area stayed dry. It worked wonders.

Check with your doctor. It could be an infection brewing.

Re: 3 weeks post hysterectomy: Abdominal incision odor

Thanks y'all! I made sure I cleaned it really well today, then put a gauze pad over it to make sure it stayed dry, and it is much better!

I'm going to keep doing this, and if it doesn't get better in a day or two, I'm going to call the doc.

Re: 3 weeks post hysterectomy: Abdominal incision odor

I have a strange odor at my site too. I have been cleaning it often. Sometimes four five times per day. I also had a total adominal with removal of everything. Yesterday I noticed a clear oozing and I read that was normal but today when I left my tummy there is an odor and spots of blood from the incision. I am not sure what to do. Is this normal ?

It's always good to check with your doctor rather than try to diagnose yourself. You are both newly post op and doctors expect calls from their patients. Please call your doctor.
