incision - vertical/horizontal?

I had an exploratory abdominal surgery 12 years ago -- big vertical incision. Now I'm facing TAH and they say that because of the size of the ovarian cyst, they will have to do another vertical. I'm wondering if anyone knows what the difference is as far as healing, etc. The vertical one was no picnic, for sure, but is it any worse than the horizontal? Is vertical rare these days?

Thanks for all your help -- you guys help me get to sleep each night!

incision - vertical/horizontal?

Well, Rita -
I am no expert; but did have my pre-op appt today and discussed with my doctor the type incision he will use. He has done over 1000 surgeries and said he only used the vertical incision if the uterus is extremely large (mine is 20 week size and not in that category), if he knows he is dealing with a cancer or if the patient has had a previous vertical incision and wishes to minimize scarring by having the incision in the same place. He said the healing would be about the same. The vertical incision is not rare, but not as widely used as it was severak years ago.
Hope that helps!

Doesn't make since!

Hi, ladies! I'm really confused. I had 2 c-sections and he did a horizontal cut both times. How could they get a 7lb 11oz baby out of a horizontal cut but they can't take your uterus or cysts out like that? You can bareley see my scars because they are so low. That just doesn't make much since to me. Just curious.
