Anyone Having Surgery Due to Heavy, Prolonged Periods?

I am curious to know if anyone is having a hysterectomy due to heavy, prolonged, and painful periods. I guess I'm checking to see if you have surgery primarily for these reasons and not reasons such as endo, cancer, etc.
I have the first 3 listed as well as irregular periods which has recently turned into every 2 weeks or so. I also have an enlarged uterus and endometrial polyps. I just wonder if I am diving into major surgery needlessly. I would feel better knowing there are others in the same boat.

TAH scheduled 11/29

Anyone Having Surgery Due to Heavy, Prolonged Periods?

I just had a hysterectomy 11/14 due to continued problems with fibroids.

However, I first had an "ablation" about 4 years ago due to out of control periods. The ablation helped a lot with the bleeding, was out-patient and I returned to work the next day.

I don't believe the ablation removes any fibroids and eventually the continued growth and weight of the fibroids caused me to have a hysterectomy. When I had the ablation I had regular monthly periods, however, they were extremely prolonged with extremely heavy bleeding.

The ablation may work for you or may put off the hysterectomy depending upon the cause. If you do have a hysterectomy, I had mine done robotically and I was out of bed and walking the same day. If I hadn't had other surgery done at the same time (which I am slower to recover from), I would say I am pretty recovered.

I am having hysterectomy on december 5th becausee of heavy bleeding. Had the novasure in august and it didnt help. Im a bit nervous, but since I have already been on hormone treatment due to failed ovaries, i hope it wont be too traumatic.

Anyone Having Surgery Due to Heavy, Prolonged Periods?

Hi there - I had my hysterectomy on Monday -- severe endimitriosis - always cramping and felt I was on my period save 3 days month. My recovery is going great - I am glad it's over and will never see another nasty menstrual cycle again. So no, for me the decision was the right one - quality of life has already increased.

i would suggest that you get a second opinion and make sure that no other options are available to you. do lots of research on the different types of hysterectomies and treatments available to you. are you planning on keeping your cervix or ovaries?

Anyone Having Surgery Due to Heavy, Prolonged Periods?

Thank you. S/O said I could get a novasure oblation but it would be a temporary fix. I opted to go ahead and get it over with while I am younger (35). The cervix will be removed but my doctor said as long as my ovaries are good (he thinks they are) he will leave them. I am not worried really about the surgery or recovery time. My biggest fear is that I (or dh)will be uninterested in sex. Thanks for your help.

thats great that you can keep your ovaries. the hormones that ovaries secrete have a lot to do with libido...it most likely wont be a problem for you. good luck with your surgery, i wish you a speedy recovery

Anyone Having Surgery Due to Heavy, Prolonged Periods?

I am having a TAH on12/13/07 for prolonged(10-15 days), irregular(never knew when it was coming), and heavy(1 maxi pad and 1 super plus tampon within 1 hour or less) periods also. I understand your concerns because I was having them also. I feel better after my pre-op appt and then this website.
Everyone tells me it will be better afterwards. I just want it done, I am very impatient.

Anyone Having Surgery Due to Heavy, Prolonged Periods?

I had my LSH due to horrible periods (I'd hemmorage for 3 days) that were long....at first 7-8 days....then 2 weeks, then spoting all month.

This, for me, was due to two fibroids.

Best medical decision I have ever made for myself.
