Dumb post-op question...driving?
I'm just wondering how soon before some of you were allowed to drive. I have a doc appt. tomorrow, maybe to be released for work on Monday. Currently, I have a sweet friend who's planning on driving, but she has problems, too, and isn't exactly the fastest moving person. My appt. is about 1 to 1.5 hours away and I don't want to be late. I'm thinking of just driving myself. I feel fine and have perfected the art of moving slowly as to not hurt myself!

Dumb post-op question...driving?
It was two weeks before I could drive because of pain medications the first week and I wasn't able to sit up long the second week due to getting sore/crampy in my abd and back. I was fine by my 3rd week.

Dumb post-op question...driving?
I couldn't drive for 2 weeks and I had an abdominal incision. At 2 weeks I didn't really feel like I could drive yet, so I didn't.
Maybe you should check with your doctor to be sure; and most importantly, be off the narcotic pain relievers at least for that day.

Dumb post-op question...driving?
It was 2 weeks before I was allowed to drive, and I have only been out driving twice. Like Diane said, make sure you are off the narcotic pain meds at least for that day. You also need to be sure that you won't hurt yourself if you need to suddenly slam on the brakes. You also want to be sure that it doesn't hurt to twist to look behind you for backing up and when you check before changing lanes.

Dumb post-op question...driving?
Thanks ladies, I've been off the Vicodyn since mid-last week, so that's not a problem. This same friend took me to my dermatologist last Monday (got an allergic reaction to one of my hospt. wrist bands...weird!) and that was my first real outting since surgery. I did pretty good, for the most part, but she's a senior and I thought we'd never get there. And that was only 20 minutes away. Not to mention, her passenger car seat sits much lower than my driver seat, so it was much harder to get in and out of.
Tonight, my hubby and I only are going out for his birthday. I told him I want to drive, just to make sure I can do it without problems. Sitting here, I tried turning and looking around, as you mentioned and I think I'd be fine, so strain or pulling. But those are great points I didn't think of, thanks!

Dumb post-op question...driving?
Driving an automatic at the end of 2 weeks with no problem. Trying to vaccum at 4 weeks that's another story. Driving OK - steer clear of the vaccum!

Dumb post-op question...driving?
If you do end up driving yourself, please stop once or twice to get out and straighten your legs for a little bit both on the way there and on the way back. You don't want to risk blood clots. I started driving our automatic a week and a half after my abdominal, but it was only out to town (approx 7 miles) to go through a drive-thru. My doc told me to stop AT LEAST every 30 mins to walk around a little bit...even if it was just walking around the car.
I would still call the doc just to be sure though.
Good Luck,
Char

Dumb post-op question...driving?
I had a nasty infection at 1 week post op and at two weeks I just was not yet up to driving. So it was 3 weeks before I was able to really drive. You have to be careful driving because if you need to suddenly slam on the brakes you can pull your stitches. I was fortunate in that my son had his learners permit so I was able to have him drive for me.

Dumb post-op question...driving?
My dr told me I could drive at 2 weeks. :steer: It was 2 weeks on tuesday, and I haven't attempted it yet. I am going to my first outing tonight with my husband to the grocery store. I still don't have much energy.
