BM Issues / Questions

Hi everyone -
I had my surgery last Friday. The doctor ordered a bowel prep the day before. 22 hours later, and only 1 hour before surgery, I was still having some pretty persistent diahhrea. Fast forward - 7 days later I am still not able to eat any solids without having diahhrea! I've lost 12 pounds since last Tuesday (not a bad thing), but I don't want to lose any more. The doctor doesn't know what it could be since I have no fever (therefore, no infection). Has anyone else ever had this issue? Prior to the bowel prep - I had never had a laxative in my life. Could it still be residual magnesium in my intestines?
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated - I feel that because I'm still not getting proper nutrition - it could be hampering my recovery time.

Thanks - you are all a Godsend!!!

BM Issues / Questions

I certainly hope that, even though your doc is puzzled, he is at least planning on testing your blood to make sure your electrolytes are not getting out of whack because of dehydration. A full week is a long time for the body to endure persistant loose stools.

I guess I would try to drink as many fluids as possible and to eat a strictly bland diet.

If you've been on a long run of antibiotics, it would be wise to be tested for c-diff in your stool, or an elevated yeast level. A full year after my surgery, after several runs of antibiotics, I developed a very serious intestinal yeast problem. It was easy to remedy, once I had proper diagnosis.

I hope you find comfort and resolution soon, Princess......s....Deb
