Shocked Ovaries?

I had my first post-op appointment a few days ago and my doctor asked if I'd had any hot flashes. I thought it was an odd question since I kept my ovaries. Then I heard something about "shocked ovaries" and temporary menopause symptoms. Has anyone experienced this? What should I be on the lookout for, if anything? Thanks!

Re: Shocked Ovaries?

Hi A-Sioux- Yes, I am not surprised they asked you that. I am two weeks recover, and had one of my ovaries removed along with uterus and cervix. I have had night sweats and hot flashes. I had my post op appt today and asked my wonderful dr about it and she said that it was my ovaries adjusting. They haven't been as bad the last couple of days, but I definitely did experience them. But luckily the doc said they will subside. Good luck and keep on getting better and better!

Re: Shocked Ovaries?

I had LAVH March 15th and within days nightsweats started. One ovary as removed bc of a cyst and that's what I attributed the sudden menopause symptoms to. I have an next appt with my dr. on thursday and will ask her about this. I have also had a problem getting a good restful sleep. Suggestions anyone?

Re: Shocked Ovaries?

For me shocked overies is a understatement..lol I had a TVH, kept both overies on 3/23...my overies seem to be on a long vacation It seemed like I woke up from surgery a different woman and by week 2 boy my family thought I had lost it but then so did I. If I wasn't bitting someones head off I was in tears. I was sooooo tired but couldn't sleep. At night time my hubby froze and sweated to death! I couldn't think straight...well ok maybe thats just me I had to call my DR because I was going nuts. I'm now on HRT (very low dose) and antidepressants...I feel so much better. This Wednesday will be 4 weeks and I see the DR Friday so well see where I go from there. I hope this helps and happy healing!

Re: Shocked Ovaries?

This diagram will explain why some ladies have symptoms and others do not even if you keep your ovaries. If the blood supply is disrupted, you will probably have menopausal symptoms. If you are one of the lucky 40% that have their blood supply come from the ovarian artery only, then there is a good chance that you will not experience issues. However, if you are one of the 4% whose ovaries gets all of their blood supply from the uterine artery, you will be one whose ovaries are "shocked" and will stay shocked. I hope the drawing helps explain a few things.

Re: Shocked Ovaries?

There is relief, I had night sweats, hot flashes and a terrible time sleeping (getting to sleep and/or going back to sleep) for several weeks after surgery. I tried a Menopause vitamin and had relief right way. I forgot the vitamins on a weekend trip and was almost in a panic but found I was okay. So....did the vitamins help while my 1 remaining ovary was still in shock or was it all coincidence? I don't know. I do know staying hydrated and watching the amount of sweets I eat helps. I am now 7 months out and have minimal hot flashes and sleep well most nights. Think good thoughts, take good care of your self ( take naps when you need to) My best wishes to you!
