I am PETRIFIED to undergo hysterectomy! (UPDATED - having D&C for now)

One out of ten! I think that risk is too high. I had Ufe at 51 for a 9 cm. fibroid. My bleeding issues were immediately resolved and now 22 months post my uterus is back to normal size and the fibroid is at 3.2 cm. and still shrinking. Ufe is wonderful.

Personally I would not do laparascopic anything. It looks none too gentle.

Interventional radiologists perform ufe. Downtime is about a week.

PS, She is my second opinion doc, my regular gyn wants me to get d & c first. I am 54 with heavy periods and clots, spotting the rest of the entire month.

You're going to go through menopause soon...I would not have a hysterectomy. I agree with sisterduke...if the bleeding is due to fibroids get UFE not hysterectomy. Personally I would not have major surgery unless the surgeon was highly experienced. No way!

I would not worry about the age but the experience with the procedure. How many DaVinci surgeries have she completed successfully.

I am just getting a D & C for now, hysterectomy at this time is just not feeling right for me. D & C will show a better pic of why I am bleeding so much. Then I can be better prepared mentally for this. Thanks for all of you and this awesome website!!!

Re: I am PETRIFIED to undergo hysterectomy! (UPDATED)

Hi Dmc0202,

I was 46 when I had my laparoscopic hysterectomy ten years ago. I am having my hysterectomy anniversary this month...and I am still pleased with my results.

I agree with the other Hyster Sisters and ask your Dr. how many surgeries she has performed..how many were converted...meaning to an abdominal hysterectomy...where your Dr. was educated, etc. Generally, from what I know of a hysterectomy surgery..there is an assisting surgeon that will be there with your Dr. also. Enquire about them.

I found in my Dr. office travels with my hysterectomy..that there is a new breed of younger Drs out there. More trained and highly skilled in the cutting edge surgeries. Drs now learn how to do less invasive hysterectomies...while Drs who graduated from medical school...10...20..or even 30 years ago may need to go back to medical school to get the updated trainings. So sometimes a younger surgeon/Dr. can also be a good thing.

That ALL being said...you have to feel comfortable with your Dr. and trust them. It never hurts to get another opinion. Drs give us options..but we make the final decision when it comes to our bodies.

Best wishes.

Mary

Thanks again for all your kind replies. I just found out that I have adenomyosis. Meeting with surgeon today. I think he does da vinci. Anyone ever have this type of surgery? How successful is it?

I was EXTREMELY pleased with my Davinci. I was back at home in 12 hours with 5 small incisions. My Dr is "only" 44 but he is a master on the thing. He was part of the team that devised and tested it back in 2005. He was one of the first to use it so I had complete confidence in him. It's very important you trust your surgeon. I'm almost 7 months out and the recovery has been very good.
