I am faced with a tough decision. I am not sure what to do.

Here is what I am dealing with. I am 30yrs old. I am having a Hysterectomy on Dec 18th. I have 2 cysts on my left ovary and I have a hormone imbalance from being overweight. Causing me to bleed heavy pretty much everyday with a lot of clots and pelvic pain. Doctor asked me if I wanted kids. I said no. Decided after having a biopsy, to go ahead and have the surgery. I been reading and talking to diff people. I am confused. I wanna keep my cervix. I have read the pros and cons. Asked the Doctor last month about it. He said it hasn't been proven to help if it stays. I have no abnormal cells and cancer does not run in my family history. I want to keep it for these reasons. It feels good to me during sex, I wanna have the added support and I just feel the need to keep it. I see no reason to take it out. I feel confused. I hear the good sides and bad sides. I called the Doctor and told his nurse I wanted to keep it. He is supposed to call me back. I know everyone is diff and it all depends on the person. What if he refuses to let me keep it? Can anyone help me? Any advice would be so helpful. Thanks.

If you want to keep your cervix and your doc says he's gonna take it all the same ... go to a different doctor. It is your body and your choice, no matter what anyone might say.

Re: I am faced with a tough decision. I am not sure what to do.

I will say this, though. Any problems you've had with your uterus, you can still have with your cervix, as it is part of the uterus. If you keep your ovaries, you may continue to have mini periods (which aren't always that mini from some of the things I've read). Having said that, I understand it is a relatively simple procedure to go back and take the cervix at a later date if it does cause problems.

Ultimately it is your choice. Do you research and ask your questions, then trust your instinct.

I forgot to add that he is taking one ovary. He wants to save the other but isn't sure he can. This is hard to decide.

Re: I am faced with a tough decision. I am not sure what to do.

I went through this same dilemma, so I feel your pain! Ultimately I decided not to keep my cervix. Reasons for wanting to keep it: one less thing removed, sexual satisfaction. Talked to my doc and researched tons. What decided me is that keeping your cervix basically means amputating your uterus: the cervix is just the part of the uterus that has the opening (the os) that leads into the vagina. Also, some women who keep their cervixes continue to have light monthly periods. No, thanks. If I'm going through the surgery, I am NOT having periods after this.

I decided to keep my ovaries. I'm in my 50s, so my childbearing days are over, but I believe they still emit trace hormones, and I didn't want to disturb that. Dr. said he'd leave them in unless they were in bad shape. They both had lots of cysts, it turns out, and he couldn't rule out cancer, so he took the worse one and left the other. I'm doing fine this way.

Anyway, that was the best decision for me. Oh, by the way, losing my cervix did NOT change the quality of sex for me even a smidge!

Re: I am faced with a tough decision. I am not sure what to do.

It sounds like you know what you want to do and you want to keep it. It should absolutely be your choice. My sister is a med student and she said she has met docs that feel strongly both ways--there is no consensus. Therefore you have to go with what feels right for you. I personally chose to keep mine and my doc supports this. If your doc doesn't support you decision, find a new doc. (By the way, I'm in MN too!)

Ty for all the feedback. I am guessing my doctor will call Monday because it is the weekend. I have decided to keep my cervix. For a lot of reasons. Hoping the doctor will allow me to keep mine! TheAdie, that's awesome! What part of Mn?

Re: I am faced with a tough decision. I am not sure what to do.

I am having the surgery because of heavy bleeding with clotting that lasts for months, pelvic pain from the cramping and I have two cysts on my ovary. He can't save the one but is hoping to save the other. I do not want kids. Tried a few things to stop the bleeding. It is getting worse. So hoping to save one ovary and my cervix.

If you don't mind me asking, what were the results of your biopsy and are other alternative (non-surgical) options a possibility for you?
