Anemic?

I am 16 day PO from an uncomlicated SAH. My friend who is a family dr was really surprised that I wasn't almost back to normal in energy level. Actually my surgeon had said I would be pretty much doing most of my normal activities by now too. My incision is healing fine, my swelling isn't excessive, no bleeding at all, on antibiotics for a uti but I have no stamina. I walk around like my 87 yr old parents, slowly and carefully and being upright for more than 30 minutes exhausts me. If I alternate laying flat and being up, I do ok but if I stay upright or walking around I get this buzzing feeling in my head, short of breath and get shaky. My friend said I could be anemic and to add some extra iron. I had been doing so much better than many people here I thought it was normal to be this shaky, but could it be something I could fix with iron? Is this what anemia was like for others?

Re: Anemic?

I'm 17 days post op and was anemic before the surgery from prolonged heavy bleeding. I was so fatigued all the time and felt faint when I got up. I began taking Floradix 'Floravital Iron & Herbs' liquid, it's non-constipating, rich in iron & B vitamins, easily absorbed, yeast & gluten free. It tastes good, too (to me, anyway!). You can buy it at better health food stores or on VitaCost.com. It isn't cheap ($34 for 17 oz.?), but it works. I like that liquid form is more easily absorbed.

Since surgery, my blood sugar level seems to drop quickly in the morning. I am hypoglycemic but, with no appetite still, I have to consciously start each day with a protein or I feel lousy & weak.

I hope you feel better soon and re-gain your vitality!

Re: Anemic?

I was anemic for a long time, so it had many faces! lololol

I had a couple of severe dizzy spells, got really tired after doing something simple like going downstairs then back up and had to lay down, fuzzy thinking sometimes, ... The doctor can run or order a blood test that will tell if you are anemic. OTC supplements may work, or they may want to prescribe one.
