Question about type of incision
I will see the gyn. again next week to hear result of biopsy and to set up the hysterectomy. I have one (at least) very large fibroid and doc already told me that vaginal surgery was out due to the size. I read someones post about a vertical incision. Does anyone know how they make that decision?
I assume this is not a choice--at least not the patients. But, what is the difference if any in recovery time and possible differences related to complications, etc.
You guys all seem calm waiting--I'm going nuts with this.

Question about type of incision
I too had to have abdominal surgery because of previous surgeries and the scar tissue left behind, made it impossible to have it done vaginally.
I had a bikini cut. The difference with the vertical is that they are not cutting across so much nerve and muscle so those don't have to heal. Also if you are heavy sometimes vertical cut is better because you don't have as much pressure (from your belly hanging) by the incision.
Usually the Dr. choses which they think is best. However, if you prefer one or the other, you can discuss it with your Dr. It is your body and you do have say in the matter. Unless there is a certain reason why a cut can't be done, the Dr. most likely will accomodate your wishes.

incision
Dear Printersdevil,
I asked my doctor if I could have a horizontal incision (also known as bikini cut) as opposed to the vertical incision. (I have a large tumor on my L ovary and the surgery is 12/12) He told me that he would make the final decision in the OR but would probably need to do the vertical due to the size and location of my tumor and the possible need to do staging surgery if the tumor is malignant. I wanted the horizontal (side to side) because it's less disruptive to the muscles below and easier to heal. My objection to the vertical was due to the trauma to the muscles below and the after effects of weakened muscles. I'm fighting hard enough to lose weight and strengthen those muscles. Looks like I will lose this fight but good luck to you! ValB

Question about type of incision
Same here, my largest (of many) fibroids was 9 x 8 x 7cm and doc told me long ago that vaginal hyst was not an option, esp since I've never had kids. My particular MD prefers to do bikini incisions unless there are extenuating circumstances. .. particularly the need to open the abdomen wider for greater access or visibility. My bikini is about 7" long and healing very well. Good luck.
