Colonoscopy before or after hysterectomy
I heard about having to do bowel prep and for some reason my surgeon doesn't require this. Just like any other surgery, I can't have anything in my mouth after late at night and that's it.
I however am wondering something else that I also suffer from. I have chronic constipation and I unfortunately depend on laxatives to have bowel movement. All the other things I was prescribed didn't work as well. I feel very uneasy about having surgery while constipated/full stomach(even though I won't eat/drink anything after the instructed time )
Should I have had colonoscopy before this? Or would it be ok to have it after? It would have been nice if I would be able to do this at the same time.

Re: Colonoscopy before or after hysterectomy
Are you due for a colonoscopy or are you doing it because of the constipation? When is your hysterectomy?
I just had my colonoscopy because of colon cancer runs in my family. If I were you, I would have the colonoscopy before the hysterectomy. I would think you would have to wait a while after a hysterectomy to have a colonoscopy.
I talked to your obgyn about your constipation worries for hysterectomy surgery.

Re: Colonoscopy before or after hysterectomy
I ditto talking to your doctor before regarding the constipation. It took me 9 months to get my bowels back working without using a laxative. I had a colonoscopy today (almost a year after my hyster) so now I have to start over. I have read of women here who said it was much easier to get the bowels regular after the colonoscopy. The only reason I had it was due to my cancer diagnosis and a brother who had colon cancer. Doctor said he found two polyps - not bad for someone 62 - but they did not look cancerous. Will know in a couple days when path comes back for certain.
My nerves took care of any constipation before surgery - my doctor did not order any bowel prep either. All he told me was when I found out my surgical time, to stop eating 12 hours before and not drink after midnight. Many women will start eating lighter foods a couple days before - I did not.

Re: Colonoscopy before or after hysterectomy
I asked and he said I don't need to have colonoscopy before hysterectomy. When I first went to a GI doctor before this, they ordered a colonoscopy but I was scared of how it was done so I didn't go. The reason I am worrying about it now is because of hysterectomy being at a nearby area and I was told that it doesn't even matter if I can't have a bowel movement for 3-4 days? This seems off to me. My surgery is scheduled for this week.

Re: Colonoscopy before or after hysterectomy
Good luck with your surgery! Since you talked to your doctor about your constipation and made him aware .... I think you have nothing to worry about.
Also, if you ever need to have a colonoscopy, don't be scared. The hardest thing is the prep the day before the procedure.

Re: Colonoscopy before or after hysterectomy
I wasn't told to do any bowel prep before surgery, but when I arrived at the hospital, the nurse had a Fleet enema waiting for me. It worked quite effectively. Perhaps your doctor is planning on the same?
