Funny Taste

Hi there. I just had a TAH on July 15th. My doctor forgot to tell me something that I had to deal with and I thought I might share it with you all. When I had my IV taken out to go home I had a really bad taste in my mouth for about 3 days. I called the doctor and described the taste. It tasted kind of salty and it was hard for me to eat anything becasue it made my food and water taste bad. He said that is was just from the IV fluid as he was giving me salt and suger water after the surgery and that it was normal. So you may experince this you may not. What helped me get through it was sucking on hard candies to get the taste out and it worked. I sucked on any kind of hard candy and I also chewed a lot of sugar free gum. So you might want to remember this hint. Good Luck to all of you on your recovery. See you on the post op side.

Interesting point - when I went on to solid food in the hospital I rejected almost everything as being too salty - dh said it wasn't but I was almost in tears disgusted with how salty the food was!!! For me this sensastion lasted about 24 hours.

Thats interesting. I had solid foods as soon as I was able to eat. I could eat almost nothing they brought me as it was way to salty or to sweet. I couldn't figure out why the hospital would put so much salt in their food. It looked like great food otherwise. Maybe it was just me.

The bad taste can also be a side effect of the anesthesia- it can leave a tinny, aluminum taste in your mouth for several days to a week after surgery.

I found that popsicles were the only thing that tasted "Normal".

Same thing here, everything tasted horrible to be honest with you. It took several days before things started "tasting good" again. I found it more so to be the case with liquids. I'm glad that's over

Cool. I am glad to see I wasnt alone with this funny taste and I thought I would share it here in pre-op because my doctor never warned me about it and my food and liquid taseted like crap and salt water. I have had surgerys and IV sbefore but this was the first time I have had that taste. Good Luck ladies on your day.

Oh, thank God someone else had that "salty" taste. I thought I was nuts! I ordered a delicious looking cup of chicken soup and I couldn't eat it because it was so salty tasting. My husband tasted it and said it was fine. So glad to hear there was an explanation for it!
