Pre-Op: What Exactly Did They Do??

I just talked to my OB and she gave me an idea of what to expect tomorrow during my Pre-Op appointment... but I'm still a bit clued out. What exactly do they do? My surgery is Wednesday.

Re: Pre-Op: What Exactly Did They Do??

My pre-op consisted of a consultation w/my doctor 2 weeks prior to surgery, then 5 days prior I had blood drawn. The day of surgery I donated urine and more blood for typing. My doctor had also ordered a chest x-ray, but it wasn't done, presumeably because I had one within the last year. In pre-op just prior to surgery, I talked in depth with the anesthesiologist.

Re: Pre-Op: What Exactly Did They Do??

Usually a short physical exam... (not a pap or breast exam) including listening to your heart and lungs, checking your throat, etc. Every doctor is different, and some just check the lungs, and others will check your thyroid size, your reflexes, and much more.

In addition to the exam, there may be lab work, chest xray and possibly an EKG.

The preop the day OF your surgery will be getting your IV in, reviewing labs, talking to the anesthesiologist, and making you comfortable.

Re: Pre-Op: What Exactly Did They Do??

my pre-op at the hosp was one week prior to surgery. had my blood taken, an ekg and blood pressure checked. filled out a 4 page form about my health and current meds, then met with a nurse who went over the form, asked questions and had me sign consent forms...
