Upcoming hysterectomy: Swimming/ Bathtub use post surgery?

I have looked at several sites and I have yet to find an answer about when it's ok to return to swimming and tub baths post hysterectomy. Can someone answer for me please?

Hi Anissa,

This is a tough question that can only be answered by your own doctor. Some gals have been allowed to swim and bathe at 3-4 weeks, while others wait to six weeks - but again, each doctor makes this decision individually.

Sorry I can't be more definitive - so please check with your doctor to discuss this. Your doctor will also need to know if you are talking about a pool with chemicals, or a lake or ocean.

I was cleared to go swimming in the ocean at four weeks, but I had a really easy recovery and my incisions were healed. I've heard of women being told to wait longer, esp. if they're having problems with the way their vaginal cuff is healing.

My doctor said 6 weeks before anything in the vagina - including swimming or baths. I had my cervix removed davinci laproscopic. She wants to make sure the vaginal cuff is healed first.

Best bet is to ask your doctor. I wrote down all my questions and timeline.

I swim at the Y 3 days a week. I had an LSH, with no complications, and was cleared to go back in after 2 weeks. If you're having your cervix removed, you'll have to wait longer, so I agree with the others that you should check with your surgeon. Best wishes for a successful surgery and a smooth recovery!
