Back in the gym when?
I am two weeks out today and so missing the gym.
I am thinking about calling the dr and seeing if I can just ride the recumbant bike with no resistance. I know I can't lift weights or use the weight machines, but what about the low reistance bands?
I have only been not working out for 2.5 weeks and I already feel like I am losing muscle tone. This is not a good.
I had worked so hard to get into good shape. I know I am probably rushing it, but I lie in bed and think through all the exercies. I know a lot of them I could not do because they engage the mid section, but shoulders, arms, legs?
My husband is lying in bed wishing for sex and I am wishing to exercise- kind of weird, huh?
I am feeling a little down and not sleeping, either. I know part of that is the surgery, but I am wondering if part of it is not exercising too?

Back in the gym when?
Dear snappy,
I know how you feel, it was very difficult for me to give up my exercise routine. I think you have the right idea to call your doctor before you do anything. It is so difficult to completely stop doing any kind of physical activity because you have been so active, but your body is healing and needs this time to heal. The advice that I was given is that you only have once chance to heal properly. I don't know which kind of surgery that you had, but I'm glad that you are feeling up to working out so soon! How about walking? That's always a good start! I was also afraid of losing muscle tone, but I have found that I have bounced back quicker than I thought that I would. Do you have a good trainer that can help you when you are cleared for your work outs?
Be Well!

Back in the gym when?
Hi, Snappy-
You know why I love this board? Everytime I have a question, I come here, and someone has already asked it! I'm at 4 weeks today, and I'm using the treadmill all the time (walking only, of course). I'm realizing just how much my kick boxing was doing at keeping my mid-section (abs, hips, and thighs) nice and tight. However, when I asked about kickboxing during my 2-week appt, my dr looked at me like I was crazy. She told me to just keep walking, and we'd talk at my 6 week.
So, I walk. And look longingly at all my equipment and dvds sitting there gathering dust. I want to do yoga so bad.
And I hear you about the exercise/sex thing. :-)
So, I guess I don't have any answers. Just let you know you're not alone. And, if you're anything like me, nobody understands this particular addiction.

Hi {{{{snappy}}}} I`m a fitness instructor part-time at a local gym and a VERY active person and yes; my recovery time was VERY hard on me..............I`m a DEFINATE addict ,of ALL of it...............the nurse in me though knew I had to let my body take the time to HEAL ................I walked quite a bit from my first week post-op..........went back to teaching at 4 weeks post-op and even though I`ve been teaching for 9 yrs; it was VERY difficult to get back into the swing of things when you do go back ,PLEASE remember to start off slow..............your body will need time to bulid it`s strength and stamina.........and pushing yourself would not be a good thing to do...........I`m now 3+ months post-op and back to my "normal" routine.....but just recently have started to feel like I`m the "old" me.........And DEFINATELY get your Dr.`s clearence too before lifting any kind of weights .................Many good wishes to you as you enjoy your recovery !!!! Back in the gym when?
Wow...this is exactly how I feel. I am sitting on the couch watching my butt expand as we speak. I was on the treadmill walking/running, as well as doing weight training and other stuff, right up until the day of my surgery. I was in pretty good shape (my 46 years and multiple large fibroids notwithstanding) going into it, and now I just HATE that I can't be working out. Yes, I've been walking on my treadmill...very slowly at first. I am 5 weeks post-op today and am up to a little over 2 miles at a 3.5 mph pace...much slower than I'm used to, but faster than a couple weeks ago! I am VERY discouraged at how swollen my belly still is...and I worry that my activity is making it worse, but I still can't stop myself from wanting to exercise. I've done nothing to engage my abdominal muscles yet...really not ready for that.
My six-week post-op is a week from today. I am hoping to be cleared to run, lift and play golf...but of course I wonder if I'll even be physically up for any of it. Any other golfers out there? I'm not much of a runner, but Ido a lot of combined walking/running interval stuff. I also do the firm body sculpting workouts, which I love. That involves leg press/lunging etc. with weights. Any feedback on what's okay and what others have done would be great...
So nice to find others who are going crazy over the fitness angle...I was so looking forward to having a flat(ter) stomach again and having my pants fit comfortably. My big fat uterus and all those fibroids are gone, but I'm left with a still-poochy middle. I HATE it! Will it ever go back down???

Back in the gym when?
Hi, I had a TVH on March 23. I felt great after my surgery (except for the first week with the catheter). After the catheter was removed I started walking. At two weeks post op I started "slowly" on the elliptical. I went in to the Dr. at 21 days post op and was released for baths, swimming and working out. I asked him what my weight restrictions were because I wanted to get back into my circuit training class. He kind of looked at me like I was nuts, but said "No more than 25 pounds and make sure it's NOT free weights, unless you are sitting down using them." I told him that I would only use the machines for now until I see him again in six weeks. I am finally up to my normal speed and distance and feel great. I will be five weeks on Thursday, so I guess I am making progress. I started my circuit training yesterday again and felt great....but made sure again I started off slowly! I still feel a little scared to do any jumping around. Boy is it difficult not to put my "normal" weights on the machine ....25 pounds on everything (especially legs) seems like I'm not even doing anything. lol It's nice to see all the responses with how everyone else is doing. The Dr. assured me that if I'm eating well while not working out as much that I will recover quickly because of the shape I was in BEFORE surgery. Slowly but surely we'll all get back there again. We just need to remember to give our body time to heal! Good luck!

Back in the gym when?
The nurse was kind of laughing when she called back. Maybe they aren't used to dealing with exercise addicts.
He said for 2 more weeks I can only do the treadmill, slowly with no incline. At 4 weeks I can try the bike and maybe some bands then, too.
Argh- I hate the treadmill- I LOVE the recumbant. I Know I probably would not enjoy it as much not having some resistance, but I was hoping.
He also said if the melatonin helped, I could do it.
He did call in another RX of Lexapro for me. I used to take it a while back.
Maybe I'll feel more normal soon.
I guess I will try the treadmill.

Back in the gym when?
I just had to let you know my experience, I know we are all different. Over here, they seem to be over cautious about exercise but I wasn't going to mess any healing up so followed advice like a good girl. I was pretty fit and felt just like you all explain after a short while post op, fed up of 'just' walking. I was Oked to return to gym at 12 weeks. I felt fine and took it easy but the next day I was so drained. i left it for another four weeks it scared me so much- no pain, just so tired and a bit swollen. Now I have been exercising and building up slowly for about six weeks. I am almost where I was before. Is it worth the worry of damage? I don't think so and I'm pleased I waited. I got a personal trainer who has got me back- the first two weeks were really just very slight treadmill and little more than stretching. It has worked!
Good luck everyone. Just remember that your body needs time to repair properly.
Best wishes.

Back in the gym when?
My doc asked me how long I felt I'd need to be off my workout and I chose to wait until mid June to go back. I had my surgery 3/14. I wanted to make sure my abdominal muscles weren't gonna rebel on me. I feel like I'm all blobbly but it will go away soon. I'm gonna start walking soon. I hadn't yet due to my tummy still bothering me. I figure it can't do much harm walking. I just have to do it early in the morning or late in the evening since its hot already here in Texas.
Hey Snappy, what part of Texas you in? Us here in south Texas are roasting already. Summer should be murder this year. AARRGG!
