Precision of robotic vs open partial hysterectomy
I have adenomyosis. I have exhausted all my alternatives to a hysterectomy, including waiting for menopause (it's just not happening)
I just found out that laparoscopic surgery is not an option for me due to an area of adhesion that includes the left side of my uterus (where the artery is), pelvis and sigmoid colon. I was told that there is one surgeon in my area who might be able to do it robotically (and who my doctors trusted to do robotically) .
I will have a consult with him this week.
Here is the question.....what method of surgery offers the surgeon the greatest level of precision ? Open surgery or robotic?
I would love a shorter recovery time, but I am concerned about a nick to my bowel or artery.

Re: Precision of robotic vs open partial hysterectomy
I can only answer as for my own experience. I had a TAH (total abdominal, removing uterus, cervix, one tube, keeping both ovaries) I did not have adenomyosis.
Keep in mind that everyone is different and recovers and heals differently. My surgery was uneventful, my recovery was fairly easy and my pain was manageable. I have a high tolerance for pain and was able to get through recovery with 600mg ibuprofen. I was released for activities at 4 weeks, sex at 6. I'm not saying that there were not any not so good days during recovery, but the good outweighed the not so good by far. I have not had a decrease in libido. As a matter of fact my libido has increased.
Try looking at hysterectomy options on this site, it may have some of the answers that you need.

I think that whatever the method, you need to have complete confidence in the doctor performing it. Good luck in your decision

Re: Precision of robotic vs open partial hysterectomy
Hi AmberV63 to HysterSisters!
Which type of surgery to have revolves around many factors, including your particular health situation, your doctor, his or her preference, and more. With my situation, my gyn onc chose open abdominal for my TAH BSO surgery - even though he did robotic surgery. I had a cancer concern, and thus he felt that open abdominal was the best surgery.
Know that there are risks with any surgery. Speak to your doctor about concerns with the recommended method, and what alternative surgery types exit for you.

Re: Precision of robotic vs open partial hysterectomy
I had a davinci robotic surgery. I can't answer the precision question because... I'm no doctor. I can tell you what I liked about my surgery though. I have four small incisions. Two on the right, one in my belly button, and one on the left. I was up and feel ok by week two, still taking ibuprofen for the swelling. I feel the robotic surgery was best for me in the case that I'm 25 and I didn't want a huge scar, and I didn't need an abdominal. If I had to go back, I would again chose the robotic over any other surgery if offered. Hope this helps

Re: Precision of robotic vs open partial hysterectomy
So I have had 3 lap surgeries, myomectomy and 2 csections, doc is trying to do DvH, and says due to the amount of adhesions if he is having difficulty, then without any second guesses he is going to do open. The robotic does offer great precision, and the skill of the doc is what is dependent about it.
I truly trust my doc, have been with him for 14 years, I am 42 now and having total hyst on Tuesday.
Good luck

Re: Precision of robotic vs open partial hysterectomy
I don't know the answer to your question though it seems like the open procedure would give the surgeon best access though I'm sure you could find a surgeon who says he/she can do just as well laparoscopically. Some surgeons have very big egos and believe they can do "anything".
I will say I had a TAH (required due to large potentially malignant tumor) and recovery was quick and easy - more so than many DaVinci cases I read about in the post op forum. I'm beyond the age of caring about scars but I was surprised to just have a thin incision with no sutures or staples.

Re: Precision of robotic vs open partial hysterectomy
Hello ,
I had Davinci surgery Feb 28 this year. My uterus was full of fibroids, scar tissue and polyps. I had a c- section 10 years earlier and always felt pulling and tugging in my abdomen later due to adhesions. During surgery my doctor had to basically detach my uterus from my bladder because of the adhesions. I had also had several problems with ovarian cysts. He was able to exam my ovaries easily though the robot technology and took my left one because of a golfball size cyst that was present during the surgery. We did talk about my ovaries and all the pain I had from them before hand and I did tell him that if something looked bad than to take them. I was able to see a picture of the ovary after surgery too. My recovery was a breeze. I haven't had any bladder complications or any complications at all. Really was the best decision I have ever made. With all that said, I give all credit to my doctor. The robot is only as good as its operator. My Doctor has over 5 years of experience using the Davinci Robot and I felt very confident with him. Ask your doctor how many surgeries he/she has done with the robot, what were the biggest challenges they ever came across, did any of their patients ever have complications after? Don't be afraid to "interview" your doctor for the job. I hope this helps some.... I am 4 months out of surgery now and feel better than I have in years.... Good luck to you

Re: Precision of robotic vs open partial hysterectomy
I had a TAH/BSO and was home after 3 days.
A Labrascopic or DaVinci was not an option for me as I had 4 C.sections in the past and a lot of scar Tissue and adhesions * Bladder firmly stuck to the Uterus *
If you are in any doubt about the procedure you should speak with your Doctor about it and let him know that it worries you.
Once they see what is going on inside they can still change from Labrascopic or DaVincy to Abominal if need be.
I was told that when I had my Gallbladder removed with Labrascopic procedure.

Re: Precision of robotic vs open partial hysterectomy
TAH due to cervical cancer and my recovery wasn't bad, and I bounced back very quickly, I was released to ease back into activity at 2.5 weeks, sex at 5 and now at 7 all restrictions lifted, in fact I was told "if you did it before surgery you can do it now". And honestly I dont mind the bigger scar its very low on my bikini line and can only be seen by my guy and when he see that much of me, the scar is the last thing he's checking out lol. Plus, I like that when I'm at the pool during the summer and on vacation no one can see it.
