Scar Tissue

I had a laprascopic hysterectomy about a year and a half ago... I had no problems with the surgery or recovery. I still have my ovaries.

Recently, I've started experiencing pain in the lower, left area my female region. I really feel it when my bladder is full. My doctor thinks that it may be scar tissue and has scheduled an ultrasound.

Does anybody else have experience with this type of a situation... how was it resolved?? And, how did you handle the pain and discomfort??

If it is determined to be scar tissue ask your doctor if you can have a referral for pelvic floor physical therapy. You can also have muscle spasms down there.

If it is scar tissue/adhesions, one of your options is a lap. with lysis of the adhesions. I just had this done. Had been experiencing pain, burning, pulling sensation in lower pelvic and groin region mostly on the right side. When urinating (I have to strain) and having a bm, I would experience excruciating pain. We thought I had a hernia because there was visible bulging from time to time. It finally got so bad that my doctor sent me to a surgeon and he scheduled a laparoscopy immediately. When the surgeon got in there he discovered the culprit was adhesions. I also had appendicitis and my appendix was completely encased in the adhesions and cemented to the pelvic wall. Still recovering and am looking forward to relief.

If you don't find the source of your problem you may consider asking for some diagnostic testing of your bladder (a good urologist or urogyno. can do this). I have IC (interstitial cystitis) and experience the worst of my pain when my bladder is full. Actually, I experience some relief after my bladder has been emptied.

I had a hysterectomy a little over a year ago and i feel the exact same feelings you had. On one side only. I am afraid of letting someone operate again because of all the bad things I read about recurring adhesions,altho im not sure that is what it is, i suspect so. What kind of surgeon did your surgery? Are you afraid of more adhesions? I would appreciate input about this. How long ago was your surgery and do you feel better? I'm? wondering what the bulging was from?

I dismissed my pain for a long before letting anyone know. In fact it was when my husband noticed the bulge that I finally told my primary care physician. I'm guessing the bulge was my enlarged/inflamed appendix since that is where the surgeon said it was cemented. My surgery was almost three weeks ago now. Each day is a little better. I have a bunch of other health problems that are flared right now making healing a little slow for me - also had a stomach virus right after the surgery. I am a little afraid of more adhesions - I had know idea I had so much growing in there in less than five years since my hysterectomy. But, after reading on this site, I know I'm not alone. My surgeon is the head surgeon in our town. I was lucky to be referred to him. He is pretty well known and has done thousands of similar surgeries. I was definitely in good hands. We hadn't even discussed my prior endo problems, but having looked through my medical records, (my husband just told me this) he searched for signs of endometriosis and there was none! The surgeon said he thoroughly cleaned me up and that hopefully it took care of the problem - hopefully I won't have to go through this again. I had lots of anxiety about having more surgery, but knew it had to be done. Now that I know my appendix could've burst and that there were so many adhesions I am thankful to have had it taken care of.

Whatever is going on with your body, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get it checked out. Who knows, maybe you won't need surgery. But either way, it is better to be on the safe side. Best wishes!

thank you for writting back and telling me all you did. I am trying to get the courage to go back to the doctor and get checked out. I have read that when they do surgery for adhesions that some doctor's will use some type of barrier to apply to protect the inside's from growing back together again. Was your surgeon a general surgeon or a specialist who dealt with adhesion's? I will let you know how this turn's out for me and I hope you continue to heal and wish you all the best.

I will be honest with you - I have remained rather ignorant through this whole adhesions thing. Even when he mentioned before the surgery that I may have some that will have to be removed I brushed it off. Not sure why I didn't take it seriously other than that maybe after all I've been through medically I just didn't really care what the problem was. I just wanted to feel better. That being said, I'm not sure what his specialties are. I do know that before the surgery he reassured me that whatever they find when they got inside, that I was in good hands and that he had done thousands of lap surgeries that involved repairs. Whether or not he was telling me he was experienced in adhesions I couldn't really say. I don't even know if he used a barrier. I'm usually much more hands on with my health. I've just been dealing with many different issues lately and I guess I just felt/feel safe with this particular surgeon. And, I'm not usually so trusting of doctors. Sorry I don't have more info or words of wisdom. I'm really quite lacking in knowledge about adhesions - still learning - most of what I've learned has been from this site.
