Post-op day 3 and extremely restless

The problem I'm having is staying down/resting. I am 3 days Post-op and I feel better than I probably should. I was living with a 6-7 on the pain scale (for I don't know how long) and now with the pain meds it's like a 3. I know that I need to rest and take it easy but I can't seem to let it go. It's still uncomfortable for me to sit in a hard bottomed chair so I find myself directing my household members while standing. (Just imagine Bugs Bunny and his symphonies.)
DH looked at me today and said "Are you supposed to be in the kitchen making dinner?" Meekly I said no and went back to my cave.
Other than not staying in bed I'm following my discharge instructions to a T.
I'm not suffering bm problems, incision pain or irritation, or the dread . Just and increased irritability.

Do you ladies have any suggestions to help keep my newly punctured self lounging?

Post-op day 3 and extremely restless

I found the first week the hardest and felt incredibly bored. In fact, here's a thread I started on this very topic: https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/sho...d.php?t=355342

It takes a few days for the general anesthesia to leave the body, and between that and the pain meds I couldn't even concentrate on a tv sitcom. I'm a big facebook addict, and even that was too much for me until the second week. I could barely update my fb status, not to mention play any of the games I had assumed would entertain me for hours. I spent a lot of time on this website, reading back through the archives of women at my stage of recovery, and that helped pass time while making feel that I was helping my recovery by gaining knowledge.

I did try to spend most of my time in bed, which may have contributed a bit to the boredom but kept me from doing things I might have been tempted to do otherwise. I finally remembered that I could fold laundry, so I had my family bring me baskets of clean laundry. Actually, I did all the laundry, but I had my kids hold the basket of dirty clothes for me while I put a few pieces at a time into the machine. So that passed some time.

I couldn't sit upright, especially on a hard chair, for a couple weeks, but I did find that a reclining position on the couch (with the help of many pillows) allowed me to be with my family and that helped pass the time. But it was too tempting for me to jump up and do things myself, so I really tried to stay in my bedroom.

It sounds like your healing is progressing as it should, but it's important not to push it. Instead of trying to make dinner, you could try sitting on a kitchen chair (on a couple pillows and with your feet up--my husband brought his reclining camp chair in for me) to chat with the people who are doing the work. I was able to sit on the couch and peel carrots and cut and stir a few things for New Year's Eve. Although I don't normally prepare food in the living room, it made me feel useful.

Hang in there. I found it much, much better once the anesthesia had left my body.

That first week was the hardest for me too. I am not a very active person but I felt like I wanted to jump out of my skin. It's so great that your DH is questioning how much you should be doing. So many sisters have families that don't get that they should not be doing much. Best wishes in your recovery.

Post-op day 3 and extremely restless

I stayed in the castle for 6 days post-op, and I was restless as all heck! It's almost as if the pain meds made me feel too good, and all I wanted to do was get up and get back to my normal routine. Being in the castle, I was watched and monitored every step of the way, so luckily, I couldn't over do things. And, once I got home, the drowzy, laziness set in. I still wanted to do things, but my energy level just wouldn't let me.

CharMay!

I was the exact same way you are! I felt great for the first time in a LONG time and just wanted to get out and moving.

BUT!!!!! I kept reading about HOW VERY VERY important it is to heal CORRECTLY. So if you go and overdo it now, the pain free life you seek will not happen. You have to FORCE yourself to relax.

Take it easy!

Post-op day 3 and extremely restless

It is strange how well we feel in the first week, I am sure it is because we are still full of drugs from the surgery.

I was so restless that all I seemed to do was walk laps around the hospital, then my home or I was lying on the bed asleep.

And then in week 2 I crashed.......

hope you get well soon...

Hi there, I had a SLH kept ovaries and uterus on 12/30/08. I am going in to week four and have still complained about back ache. I notice the pain comes in when being up on my feet for too long (20min) what might seem very little to others, to me it seems like a long time. I am a very active person, I have ran upto 1/2 marathons and visit the gym atleast 1 1/2 4 to 5 times a week. Before Op I said to myself, this will be easy for me as I am very active. Here I am 24 days later and can only be up for short peiods at a time. I have been knitting and keeping my mind occupied in my bedroom, so that i dont get frustrated or bored too easily. I have an 8 year old and hve learned to play x-box and board games with him. He's loving it!!! although there are times that I sleep thru the movies, for him it's quality time that I am spending with.
I wish you the best recovery and recommend patience. The way I see it is if you have family and friends that are willing to pamper you. Take advantage of it, this is the time that your body needs the rest. You will find out soon that time and health is the most precious after a hard surgery. So enjoy it and heal soon....

Today I took only half of my pain medication dosage. I think part of problem was that I felt awesome (high) and just wanted to get to those projects that I had let slip. With only half the pain med dose I wasn't suffering but it allowed me feel my mortality. I was much more successful in staying in bed today. Thanks everyone!

Yes, it is easier to behave yourself when you are hurting! I wanted to suggest that you back off from the pain meds, but I also know that we shouldn't suffer needlessly.
