How soon can I start running after TAH
Hi,I had a TAH on 6 July 2016, my dr only wants to see me for 1st post op check up on 1 September, 8 weeks. Prior to TAH I ran a total of between 30 to 40 miles or 50 to 60 km per week. How soon can I return to training? Where can I find a training programme that will get me running fit for a half marathon in October?

Re: How soon can I start running after TAH
Perhaps you can call and ask if running is ok at 4 weeks? I wouldn't run without your doctor's ok though. You have a tremendous running base already, so I suspect you'll get back to your running relatively easily. I have been using the Jeff Galloway run/walk method for all my distance runs (even prior to my surgery). It's very easy on your body. Perhaps you could consider that as a way to ease back in once you have your doctor's ok. Your body will tell you how it's going and then you can adjust from there.

Re: How soon can I start running after TAH
I just had my two week checkup. My mileage was similar to yours. Because of the way I was healing, my doctor said he would be OK with me doing a little light running. Thursday was my three week mark, and today I tried my first stab at running. It's a very modest program of alternating 1 minute runs with 4 minute walks. That felt pretty good. Then I got the dumb idea a few hours later of doing another three mile walk. That, while in no way a disaster, was not bright. I am stiff and sore. I keep forgetting how much extra work my back is doing to protect my abdomen. Well, it's reminding me. With snark. Just remember, rebuilding your fitness is going to require patience. (And I am absolutely lecturing myself here. Sigh.)

Re: How soon can I start running after TAH
I am 58 and had a TAH 5 weeks ago. My MD just cleared me to start running, knowing I was previously running 25 mpw plus swimming another 5-6 miles. However my abdomen is still very tender and gets sore as the day does on- I needed a vertical incision. Will running make it worse?

Re: How soon can I start running after TAH
I had total laproscopic hysterectomy 4 weeks ago and am having a very hard time not running. I was doing about 30 miles a week running and about 30 miles a week walking, and just walking is making me antsy. I actually ran a mile yesterday, thinking somehow I was good at 4 weeks, but then I read about prolapse and completely freaked out. I called my doctor and she said no to running until 6 weeks.
Does anyone know if running too early can cause prolapse?

Re: How soon can I start running after TAH
I have mild prolapse and just had my hysterectomy about 3 weeks ago. My dr said nothing that engages the abs till she sees me at 6 weeks. I'm allowed to walk and go slow on the elliptical. I'm going to pelvic pt to strengthen my pelvic floor muscles after the 6 week appt. Yes, running or any jumping type exercise can increase risk of prolapse but with proper strengthening of the pelvic floor, you can reduce the risk. A hysterectomy or any pelvic surgery increases the risk of prolapse so definitely err on the side of healing well and making sure to do pelvic floor exercises so you stay strong. And don't do regular ab exercises like crunches, that puts too much pressure on the pelvic floor. Just google pelvic floor exercises and do them weekly, its quick and easy and will definitely help since those deep muscle groups actually make you a better runner when strong and healthy. They help stabilize your hips and back. Just remember, you only get one chance to heal. I can't wait to run again, the walks and coming nice weather just make it harder to be patient!
