bladder "nick" during hysterectomy??
bladder "nick" during hysterectomy
i had a total hysterectomy (TAH BSO) feb 4th. i guess the surgeon didn't notice all the blood in my urine or catch his mistake during the surgery... although i don't remember much after the surgery, i had major problems. i continued to bleed internally for 24hrs before they decided to take me back in and explore. my blood pressure hit 54/37 and chest cavity and abdominal region filled with blood... i looked 9 months pregnant before anything was done!
i had a nicked bladder and since they waited so long, i also had 4 blood transfusions and came dangerously close to dieing. so the second surgery was on the morning of feb 5th... and they released me on sunday. i went home and evidently my body wasn't ready. i began bleeding from my abdominal incision. my fiance and i called the hospital and they said "goodluck"... we got the bleeding stopped as i lay on the couch. i figured it would be a good idea to empty my foley before i went to sleep, so i went to the restroom. next thing i know, i was GUSHING blood from my incision and we had to call 911 and i was transported by ambulance back to the hospital where they gave me 2 more blood transfusions. i stayed there until friday the 13th of feb.
i had the cath removed tuesday, feb 17th and i'm still having nothing but trouble. this morning i woke up in a bed soaked with urine... i'm so frustrated!!! i don't have alot of pain, but i have alot of leakage. i'm scared this is going to keep up and i don't know what to do about it. i can stop midstream and start again. i do the exercises, and nothing is helping. i'm embarrassed and i think i have been through ENOUGH....i'm so sick of the situation, i just want to feel better!
any advice?

bladder "nick" during hysterectomy??
Oh my gosh! I am so sorry that you have had such a tough time.
I hope that this all sorts itself out soon so that you can finally start to heal.
The bladder issue would worry me and it doesn't sound like you are getting the help you need from your Dr. [ I don't think he even deserves the cute Dr. symbol]
Is your bladder emptying well during the day? Did your Dr. have you do a measuring of your urine output and residual? It seems like with the nicked bladder he would be very cautious before removing your foley.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and if things don't start to improve I think I would seek out a urologist for the bladder issue. God bless you and here is a

bladder "nick" during hysterectomy??
thanks so kindly. i'm having a difficult time dealing with all the drama. i'm now with a urologist for the bladder issue. the gyno that did my hysterectomy had called in this urologist to help assist in the second surgery. he seems to be very good and he has taken the time to call me himself and check on me. the gyno on the other hand... well, i'm not pleased.
the strange part is that, yes my bladder empties well during the day. of course if i struggle to cough, laugh, or attempt to get this gas released, i have a large gush of urine. it's ... embarrassing and very discomforting.
this morning i woke up my fiance to let him know we need to clean the bedding and he just said "come here" and curled me up on his side of the bed. i'm lucky in the sense that he's very understanding and loves me unconditionally. yet... i'm still very timid about all of this. it seems to much easier to sit here and discuss the issues with total strangers?
thanks for your time and understanding,
heidi

I am so sorry! I had a nicked bladder too but they caught it during surgery. I had no idea it could have been so much worse. I wish you didn't have to deal with that on top of everything else - which is quite enough (healing from hyst). I'll keep you in my prayers! xo Genevieve

bladder "nick" during hysterectomy??
consider yourself lucky! my frustrations grow and grow. i didn't have decent care at the hospital and i blame some of the delay in recovery on that staff. i'm a forgiving person, but as the days creep by, i'm getting angry.
the hospital that i was in was "full" so they stuck me down in OB. i was put in room 122 and almost forgotten. my friends couldn't even find me... room 122 wasn't even on the hospital map. in order to find me, you had to ask. i was stuck in this little "dungeon". many many times, i would call to be walked or temp check and i would receive nothing. my mother was there visiting me and she heard me call to have my fever checked... 2 1/2 hours later she was quite upset that a nurse hadn't shown up. then she called my dad....
we ended up with the police and 3 security officers there... but the nurses FINALLY paid attention to my needs. my family had to rub me down with cool rags to lower my temp and stayed by my side 24hrs a day until i was released. i don't remember much about it, but i do feel as though they are partly responsible for my delay in recovery.
either way... now it's up to me. i'm trying to be patient... it's just hard for me to pull off!!!
thanks for welcoming me. i think my treatment in the hospital made me feel like i was supposed to be running laps around the hospital property and sing loudly that i'm fine. i'm not.

Self Advocacy
I will consider myself lucky - for sure. It sounds like you were not well cared for. What you are describing is not okay (hospital treatment). I have a different health issue (a chronic, strange syndrome) and I was not treated well by some of the doctors and health care providers when I was in the hospital for that issue. It took so much energy to be my own advocate and ask myself what was acceptable and not acceptable. When you feel ill, the last thing in the world you want to do is muster the energy to defend yourself or say "Hey - this was not okay." and then do something about it. In that case, if I hadn't, I would have continued to go undiagnosed and would have continued to be treated poorly. If you find yourself thinking that some things are unacceptable I support you in pursuing some kind of action, whether it's a letter, a phone call, or whatever. And if you are just too tired to do any of that, I support you in that as well. Right now you are still trying to recover. You have so much on your plate. In any case, I think you have every right to be upset and question what happened.

bladder "nick" during hysterectomy??
Oh my.... I'm so sorry to hear about your troubles.
While my bladder wasn't nicked, I did have serious leakage problems the last 2 days my cath was in and then after it was taken out. (My cat was in for 11 days, post-op. I still have some leakage, but it's getting better, now.)
I bought 5 cloth underpads, from a medical supply store. I put one on the seat of my recliner and another one on my side of the bed. (Luckily, mine never got wet......) They are easier to change, wash and dry, than a whole set of sheets.
I also bought 2 types of POISE (bladder control) PADS: the moderate extra coverage and the maximum extra coverage. I wear the moderates during the day (and now at night as well.) I initially wore the maximums, at night, but didn't need them after a couple of days. (If you have some serious urine leakage, regular maxis don't cut it. Maxis are made to absorb and hold thicker liquids, while bladder control products are made to absorb and hold thinner liquids.)
I suppose, you could buy any other "prestige" brand or a store brand, but I like the fit and material of the Poise brand better. (I bought several brands to try them out. Some of the store brand labels read "As compared to Poise," but to me they seemed of a lesser quality and not as good of a fit.) In the end, a (16 count) package of Poise Pads did cost me about the same ($4.99) at Walmart, as the CVS or Rite Aid brands.
I also prefer the longer length of the extra coverage styles. I'm a bit more curvy and tend to have more "back flow," instead of straight down. (Sorry if that's TMI.) From my nursing days, I also remember than most women tend to need more "back coverage" when lying down or sitting in a reclined position.

bladder "nick" during hysterectomy??
I really am sorry that you have had to go through such an awful experience, very scary and upsetting for you and your family.
I think it would be worth giving the urologist a call to get his advice as I am sure the amount you are leaking overnight is not normal.
Your fiance seems to be a wonderful guy so hang on to him! I am sure that you never thought you would have to talk to him about some of the subjects you are having to but I'll bet that it will bring you closer than ever.
Hugs
