Hyst for fibroids?

I don't think so. I had a myomectomy and the doc removed 5lbs. of these beasts. The biggest was a posterior fibroid. My surgery went well and I recovered fine.

A few years later for reasons not related to fibroids, I had a laproscopic hysterectomy. This was due to cancer and my hysterectomy recovery was a non issue..due to the fact that I was able to have this laproscopic procedure. I woke up, was fine and normal in 2-days.

Some of my family and friends ask if I wish I'd skipped the myo and just gone for the recommended hyst and my answer is always NO. I'm the same and fine but my answer is still NO.

Just my choice and everyone should have that same option.

Hyst for fibroids?

Hi Bridge,

I did have a hyst for fibroids and I am still very pleased with my decision. I had quality of life issues (heavy periods, bladder incontinence, pelvic pressure, lack of energy) with my fibroids and a hyst was a good choice for me.

I have a family history of estrogen dominant women. My younger sister had a myomectomy a few years ago for a grapefruit sized fibroid. She went on to have two children after. Her fibroids have reoccured and she is possibly looking at having an abdominal hyst. My other sister just had a TVH for fibroids and my 79-yr.old mom had smaller fibroids and never had a hyst.

In my case, my 2 Drs and I discussed a myomectomy and we felt it was not the best option for me. I was past child bearing years and both my Drs thought, with my history, that my fibroids would possilby grow back and then some with a myo. I was at least 5 years out from menopause and my Drs thought it would not be of help in shrinking my fibroids.

And I agree with what you said. The ~choice~ to have a myomectomy vs. a hysterectomy is very important.

Sending best wishes~

Mary

Hyst for fibroids?

I didn't have surgery for mine - I had a uterine artery embolization (UAE). My main problem was the gushing bleeding, anemia, etc. In spite of having a 10cm fibroid compressing my bladder I didn't have much of a problem with that - other than getting up once a night to use the bathroom. It's been over year since my UAE and I haven't had a period since - which can happen in about 15% of the people my age (49). I could not be happier. My bleeding problem is gone - my fibroid has shrunk considerably - I don't have to get up at night any more - my stomach is flatter - and I'm probably in meno now and likely will have no more problems with fibroids. I'm finding it hard to believe this is really menopause since I haven't had any symptoms - I guess everyone doesn't have problems with that though.
