Anti embolic stockings

Hello everyone,
How long should the anti embolic stockings be worn for? I was advised by hospital until I'm more mobile. I'm nearly 5 weeks post TAH. I'm not yet as mobile as before but I am walking around house/street and have been out forumch and shopping briefly! They are cutting in at the area below my knees but I'm terrified of getting a DVT/PE! Any suggestions!

Re: Anti embolic stockings

I wasn't told anything about them, but I was connected to that machine with the compression things(I can't for the life of me think of what they are called)
for 4 days and nights at the hospital.

Re: Anti embolic stockings

If they are cutting into the back of your legs near the knees, take them off. They are too tight and could do more harm than good.

Re: Anti embolic stockings

I had my hysterectomy on 12/3 and still wearing them 24 hours a day, except when showering. Are you at higher risk for DVT/PE? I have Factor V, MTHFR, and PAI (I know, lucky me....) so I will be wearing them for a few more weeks. I agree that if they are cutting you behind the knees, it is a problem. I would contact your doctor about this. My doctor asked if I was walking enough, and I said "define enough". He responded with "if you get a clot, then it wasn't enough". So they are staying on me!

Re: Anti embolic stockings

I wore mine for the first three days while I was in the hospital. I asked the nurse who removed my IV prior to release if I could take the stockings off, and she said yes, so I did, as they were getting kind of sweaty and gross.

She also said I could take them home with me, so I did that and washed them out when I got home, but I never did wear them again.

Starting day 4 I went out and walked around my neighbourhood a couple/few times a day and of course I was also walking around my apartment, taking care of myself and my cats. I never had any problems with clots, so I guess that was "enough" walking.

Re: Anti embolic stockings

I think that wearing the stockings long term really has to do with blood clotting disorders that have been identified and level of activity and risk of DVT/PE.

Re: Anti embolic stockings

GoodGravy-you must be medical. I agree-ask the doc. They are in place to decrease chance of Pulmomary Embolism from dislodged clot (dvt). Unless you are at risk (extreme obesity, clotting disorder, previous clot, etc)-he will most likely stop them-as long as you are ambulating around the home every few hours. I had the machine inflated type that stopped day 2 once cath out and I was mobile. Good luck!
