8 days post hysterectomy: Straining while going to the bathroom

I am confused...my doctor told me it was ok to bear down to have a bowel movement and I have been...I am 8 days out from a tvh and bladder sling. But I keep reading on here not to strain. Have I done any damage by pushing? What will happen if you strain to go? Will I ruin the sling? Thanks!

Think it depends on how strong your pelvic muscles are and how old you are I'm old 80yrs so decided not to strain.

Hi there, I've also heard straining isn't good so I came across Michelle Kenway who is a trained physiotherapist, she has many really good pelvic floor exercises for bladder problems, bowel and prolapse problems. She has put up about 40 free videos on Youtube one of them is "How to empty your bowel without straining" There is a technique where you lean slightly forward and expanding your waist and involves a mmmmooooo sound. I have found this terchnique invaluable through my recovery even though it has been a great source of laughter from family and friends. Really worth having a look and a try. I have found some of her videos so helpful. I hope this helps you! Oh and don't forget what she says at the finish of that video so it helps your pelvic floor muscles.

Re: Straining while going to the bathroom

Thanks so much for the responses! I am 53 years old and I've always had bowel issues...nothing medically wrong, just a difficult time going. I don't think I would have had a bowel movement if I hadn't pushed, but I am worried what damage I may be doing. I will definitely watch those videos today!! I appreciate the info! Hoping today is a little better than yesterday

Re: Straining while going to the bathroom

Just remember with pelvic floor exercises get the all clear from the doctor. If the feces is hard and difficult to come out then you can very gently press around the anus to help it come out, listen to your body and stop if there is pain. Hope this helps. I'm still trying to get my fibre intake right as things have changed since having the surgery. Drinking water helps as well.
