What's this I hear about weight gain?

I've heard that there is possibilty of weight gain after hysterectomy surgery. Is this true? What if you keep ovaries...same thing? Let me know your experience..thanks.

What's this I hear about weight gain?

I haven't gained any wt since my hyst. My dr said I could not expect to eat the same am't I ate before surgery when I was active. I am a lifetime member of WW and I have been counting my pts. I started walking at around wk 3 and now am walking a little over a mile.

What's this I hear about weight gain?

If you don't put it in your mouth, it can't go on your hips. I thought the thyroid was in charge of the metabolism issues.

What's this I hear about weight gain?

I am 8 weeks post-op. I found I lost 4-5 pounds after surgery due to nauseau...now my appetite is back and I'm back to where I started. I have not noticed any more weight gain than what came back because of "opening my mouth"

If you keep your ovaries, you shouldn't have any weight issues you didn't already have. Surgical menopause is another story and would depend largely on HRT and your body's particular metabolism balance.

Though the thyroid is in charge of the overall metabolism, the ovaries are part of the endocrine system and help the body decide where to put fat (most women put it in their hips, pregnant women add breast mass and post-menopausal women tend to get more around the belly). Your mileage may vary.

It's been 15 months since surgery for me and I'm within a pound of what I was going into surgery. I didn't have a weight problem before and I don't have one now.

Take care.

What's this I hear about weight gain?

I really hope it isn't true about the "weight gain" because I was plannng to lose some weight after surgery! I don't understand how it could make a difference anyway.

What's this I hear about weight gain?

Hi!
I had my ovaries out and have gained about 6 lbs since surgery.

However, I will also say that I have NOT been eating properly either, and am making a concerted effort to get back on track.

Too much junk around the house with holidays and what not. I'm working on it though!!

Hugs,
Jo

What's this I hear about weight gain?

Hi, I had a tah/bso over three years ago. I've been on hrt since the day after surgery and will continue with it for a few more years. I have a little more belly than before my hyst but am about the same weight. I do stay pretty active ( I dance, especially clogging ). My weight fluctuates a few pounds but stays within my desired range.

Best wishes, I hope that all works out well for you.

Thanks for the clarification juniper. I really don't know too much about the endocrine system. Unfortunately ,for the wrong reasons, I will be learning about it because I have a new problem with my thyroid, that's why I commented on it.
