Anybody else hear the latest results about having a hysterectomy?

I have heard this on the radio all week but paid no attention until tonight when it was talked about in depth on the radio. Now scientists are finding that having your ovaries out can cause a lot of problems. Increased dementia and a bunch of other stuff. Not something I really needed to hear since I'm only 45 years old.

I had everything out due to endometriosis and fibroids. I had no choice. But now they tell us one thing causes another thing. It's never ending. I don't want to end up with Alzheimer's disease. My great aunt had it. It's no fun. What scientists don't say is what we can do to prevent the side effects of a hysterectomy if the ovaries are taken. Sometimes I think we swap one problem for another because I had no choice but to have everything out, but the thoughts of having all these side effects later on isn't very appealing either. I'm not a candidate for HRT either, so I'm been having awful hot flashes and mood swings. I thought it would get better as time goes by, but it only gets worse. It's been a little over 4 months post op since my hyst. Also, I have a very difficult time concentrating, and this was before I listened to the news. I sweat like crazy. When I'm working around the house, the sweat will start and just drip down me. I didn't know surgical menopause would be this bad. I knew it wouldn't be a piece of cake, but I didn't think it would be this bad either. First I was told I could take HRT before the surgery. Afterwards, 3 different drs. said I wasn't a good candidate for it. So I've been on nothing since the surgery. I've had insomnia ever since I came home from the hospital and never get a good night's sleep. I wake up each day tired as ever. I feel like a zombie I'm so tired from the lack of good sleep. Basically I just drag myself around each day doing what needs to be done, but I have never felt as good as I did before the surgery, even with the endo and fibroids gone now.

luvs2Quilt----why are you not a candidate for hrt? Keep in mind that they are always going to find a "new" finding on everything! We cannot second guess ourselves on what we had to have done. I am 49 and I had to have everything removed also. I had tumors on my ovaries besides all my other problems. What I heard was the dementia was in women over 65. I am sorry you are struggling so bad since surgery. I am on hrt, and the only problem I have had was the dose was too strong and gave me migraines. Dr. lowered the dose and so far so good. Good luck as you continue to heal. Hopefully something can be done to help you. God bless you.

Kristi,
The drs. say because I have high blood pressure and some other problems, the chance of a stroke is too high. Before the surgery I was told that I would be taking a low dose HRT. Afterwards everything changed, and I don't know why. I don't know if the drs. are getting afraid of HRT or what. I'm going to keep searching for something. These hotflashes are miserable.

Have you checked into "natural" HRT? They have compound creams that are natural that are supposed to be more gentle. I don't know much about it, I just know it's out there.

Best of luck and I hope you feel better.

i have a very similar situation i will be 45 in a few weeks and have hot flashes but it is the night sweats and no sleep that are hardest due to health issues i also cannot take HRT
i hope that it will get better for you have you tried anything for your sleep? i started taking ambien CR and while i still wake up at least it helps me get more sleep
have you talked to your doctor? or done a search here to see about the sweating??
most of all i just wanted to give you a cyber hug and hope that you will get some relief very soon

I too read this and panic set in.. There is right on the hyster sisters site, and article about this very issue.. I am looking at it right now. It is to the right in the column labeled HYSTERECTOMY NEWS "GOOD EGGS: Ovaries aid the brain. Read that then follow the link to the actual article and further, to the mayo clinic website...What I am gathering is that some type of HRT should be taken whether you have one/both ovaries removed, and the younger you are(the further from menopause) the more the reason. But again, panic first, then read again is my motto..so I could be completely wrong here..
What I read mentioned cognitive issues (which I already own due to several concussions) and Parkinson's. And both scare the crap out of me..
I guess now we have to make another appointment to talk to our gyne...

I'm going to a seminar in the middle of September. A dr. that specializes in endocrinology is the speaker. The group is small so I will be able to ask him a lot of questions. I'm going to see if there is something natural that I can take. I sweat so much I go through clothes, especially shirts, like crazy. But what I'd give for one really good night's sleep with no nightmares. I was just given a prescription for Ambien but haven't had a chance to fill the Rx yet. I'm going to try and do that tomorrow and see if it helps. I already take so many different pills for anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, cholesterol, anemia, etc. that I feel like a walking pharmacy. I'm supposed to be taking my calcium plus vitamin D pills twice a day, but I don't always take them because they are like horse pills and I'm afraid I'm going to choke. Oh, and on top of that I have really bad acid reflux and take medication for that also. I feel like my body is falling apart. LOL.... Thank you for the cyberhug.

Oh-this dr. that is speaking knows all about HRT too.

Parkinson's Disease is what is really scaring me. I see what it does to other people and I don't want to end up like that. I guess I'm going to have to read that article. I just hope I can find it. I'll have to talk to my dr. also.

i was on lunesta for sleep but finally tried the ambien CR
and at first did not take it every night but now i do ..
because i must get more sleep
i know i am on alot of medications seems like i do one thing then have an effect from it
could you use a pill cutter for your calcium to make it smaller?
should be interesting to see what the speaker says
my gyno/ reg doc want me to try HRT to help me with the night sweats and sleep..
but my rheumatologist says NOT that so my trying the ambien CR was the other choice i had...

Robin, The article is right at the top, under the search box, to the right of the page. Close to your welcome message..
Did you happen to notice our screen names?? I thought that ironic.
I will be signing off soon, but will check back tomorrow to see if you found it.
My first day back to my second job. I will be exhausted for sure...
Joanne
PS. ambien did not work for me, I had been taking Lunesta for probably a year , I am off it now, and sleep like a babe..
