Kept an ovary, and still an emotional wreck!
I'm about three weeks post-op from my SAH, and let me say first that I WAITED five years to have this done. My doctor is very conservative and didn't want to perform the surgery unnecessarily despite my heavy bleeding issues and growing fibroids. Ultimately, a trip to the hospital for severe anemia convinced him that I needed the hysterectomy.
Judging from the hundreds of posts I've read on here, my healing seems to be right in line with what is expected. In fact, I'm somewhat ahead of the game in many respects. However, for two consecutive days I had a bout with severe depression-like symptoms (crying for no reason, sadness). Coincidentally, I saw my doctor today and he said there were a number possibilities that may have contributed to the symptoms, including ovulation in my remaining ovary, the "loss" factor (despite my wanting the surgery), or a surgical phenomena that takes place when the blood flow to the ovary is suddenly removed from one area. He predicted the condition would lessen with time.
As this was the first time I experienced this, I'm fairly sure my symptoms are directly related to the surgery. So my question: Has anyone else who has kept one or both ovaries experienced this? Was it often, i.e., monthly? Did the symptoms increase or lessen over time?
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who may have experienced this. After 24 hours, my symptoms are gone and I feel like new again. Just wondering if this is something I should remain prepared for. Thanks for any information provided!

Re: Kept an ovary, and still an emotional wreck!
It is not uncommon at all to feel emotional following this surgery, even keeping your ovaries.
For one, you just had a major surgery and your body is adjusting. Besides getting all the anesthesia out of our system, our body needs to heal physically from having an organ removed and various tissues cut and sewn, we often have used pain medications we don't normally take which can have side effects, our eating, drinking, sleeping, and exercise habits have all been messed up, besides the hormonal issues whether or not we have kept an ovary or are adjusting to HRT!
As your doctor mentioned, the blood supply to the ovary(ies) can be interrupted with the removal of the uterus and until another good blood supply is established, your ovary may not be working as well as it should and thus not providing you with an adequate supply of hormones.
Also, you could be experiencing PMS issues. Since I no longer used the pill to help with my cycles following my hysterectomy, PMS nailed me! I had not realized just how much the pill had helped in that area!
Additionally, your signature line states you used Lupron prior to surgery. Thus, your body may still be trying to adjust and get back to normal after being in pseudo-menopause.
All in all, tears are completely understandable! If they continue, you will want to seek further advice from your doctor, but for right now go ahead and give yourself a break! You are really early post op and you likely need some more time to heal and adjust. Try to get more sleep, increase your intake of fluids, eat as healthy as you can, walk when you are able, read a good book, call a friend, whatever you can do that will lighten your heart.
Sending many extra and good wishes your way!

Re: Kept an ovary, and still an emotional wreck!
I had these same "fits" for about 3 months. It was once a month for a couple of days. I assumed it was when I ovulating. One particular outstanding crying jag was because I would never have a reason to buy those new fun colored tampons they were advertising on t.v. Really?
I also did Lupron injections and think that also screwed things up for awhile.
Things will get better - hang in there!

Re: Kept an ovary, and still an emotional wreck!
Thank you both for your replies and Weiser it was very astute of you to notice that Lupron may be the contributor. I went back on the calendar and it was exactly 28 days since my final shot prior to surgery. Neither I nor my doctor noticed, but you did! And Mar, it helps to know there are others having the same crying fits. All in all, the episode lasted 24 hours and I was in tune enough to know it wasn't me but rather the hormones. Thanks so much both of you for your feedback. It gives me tremendous relief to know that this is normal, even if it may be a monthly occurence for a while.

Yep, my ovaries went to sleep for the first 3 months. I had the hot flashes & night sweats. Once they woke back up everything was fine. It just happens. I hope you feel better soon.
