Had hyster 2.5 weeks earlier than planned

instead of the 25th of April which was scheduled, I was admitted on April 4, 2005 and the surgery was on April 7, 2005 at 7:30 am. I came home today (April 9, 2005).

I have to say that I was in extreme pain when I woke up from my surgery, something I was NOT prepared for. I felt that most of my reading on here didn't say how much pain you'll be in the first 48 hours. I wasn't prepared for this.. I thought I was being cut in half. I'm still in a lot of pain, still more than the pain before the surgery.

I had TAH and the remaining left ovary/tube removed. I started Climara for hormone patch.

I'm glad its over with, but again, I wasn't ready to feel this much pain following the sugery. I hope to feel like most of these posts read after a few weeks... but wish they would've prepared me more.

I too was surprised by the pain after surgery, but each day it does improve. The best thing is to rest, sleep, eat well, drink water and if pain meds were prescribed be sure and take them until the acute pain lets up.

I thought it would last forever but at 5 weeks I am amazed how much better things are, not perfect but better.

Take good care!

Dear acatlover,

It is never easy to have a surgery moved up like this. It sounds like this was kind of traumatic for you. I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing so much pain. I wonder if you have talked to your dr about how much you are continuing to experience?

You should be able to manage the pain with your meds and by keeping your activity to a minimum until you are ready and able to do more. Are you staying down pretty much and being able to rest? If you can't find relief with the pain meds you have, you need to call your dr and get something different. It hinders your ability to heal if you are constantly in pain.

I'm also sorry you weren't prepared more for the pain. We are all different in our pain tolerance and in what we have done. I know I expected less pain than I experienced too, but don't know if I ever wrote about it. I know they do all they can to manage it for us in the recovery room. I don't know what might have happened in your case that it was not taken care of more quickly.
You are so very early in your recovery, please rest and take care of yourself. It will get better with time. Keep us posted.

's, Rita
