Re: "when can you drive" post opt 3 1/2 weeks

I started driving my 5-speed 16 days post op (I had been released by my doctor at my two-week post op). I moved the seat up closer than usual, so I didn't need to stretch as much. I was apprehensive at first, and just sat in the car in the driveway to try out the mechanics of everything. In case it didn't work out, I took my DH with me on my first run, so he could take over if needed. It all worked out well.

Everybody is different though, and you shouldn't drive if you don't feel comfortable or confident! Try out the driveway thing first if you have doubts.

Hello everyone,
I had my surgery on March 5, I'm still alittle sore, but most of all I'm been really depressed most of the time. Has anyone feel like this

My instructions were similar. At my one-week followup he said to give it one more week. I also drive a 5-speed but he said it was no problem. The main concern they have is if you have to do sudden braking.

As already said, everyone recovers at a different pace so you should probably check with your doctor first.

I also started driving my 5 speed a little over 2 weeks out. No biggie.

Re: "when can you drive" post opt 3 1/2 weeks

2 weeks was when I got the ok to start driving again and it felt great to be able to go places on my own! Although I just got in the car and didn't check the gas level and ended up running out of gas. I had to call DH to come get me since I was sore from walking in the store and couldn't walk home on top of that even tho I was only about 6 blocks from my house! I just sat in my car and cried until DH came and rescued me. I'm not even sure why I was so upset. I guess it was just my hormones. So my point is once you get the ok from the doctor to drive make sure you have ENOUGH GAS!!! LOL

Re: "when can you drive" post opt 3 1/2 weeks

I was cleared to drive at 2 weeks, but with restrictions. We had been having a lot of snow and my doc was afraid I would be in a situation to have to stomp on the brake. When the roads cleared I ventured out. Was a little apprehensive but did ok. When the weather got bad again I just waited til hubby could take me places.

Re: "when can you drive" post opt 3 1/2 weeks

I didnt think to ask about driving again at my 1 wk post op visit, and didnt have another Dr visit til today. Yesterday I volunteered in my sons preschool class for an hour, and drove myself to his school-about two miles. That was my first drive by myself, and I did fine. Felt kinda weird to be driving again tho.

Re: "when can you drive" post opt 3 1/2 weeks

I was told when I was dismissed from the hospital that I could drive as soon as I was off narcotic pain meds and felt like I could brake suddenly and make instant steering corrections without worrying about pain - the idea being that I WOULD go ahead and do those things without pausing to think about it.

The first time I drove was yesterday. I think I could have before, but just didn't really have anyplace to go by myself. I mean what's the point of driving myself to the store if I can't buy anything because I can't put it into the car or carry it into the house?
