How long will my ovaries continue to work?

My surgery was january 2008.
My mom also had the same surgery as me many years back at about the same age as I.
She had to have hormone replacement therapy after a year.
Menopause has SOOO many symptoms I will never be able to tell if its coming on.
I want to know on average... from the women who still have both overies but NO uterus..how long their ovaries have continued to function properly. Ive read on here.... 10 years but since i know my moms stoped functoning after a year I just dont know. Maybe she had hers removed and does not know. I nkow that sounds awful but when you dont understand what doctors are saying to you its possible.

Re: How long will my ovaries continue to work?

Well, I am pushing nine years post op and mine still function. My mother's functioned for over 20 years taking her to natural menopause at age 50.

There really is no way to know for sure how long yours will work. If you are concerned, talked to your doctor. It is fairly easy for them to check your FSH level which would let you know if you are headed into menopause or not. Mine has been checked a few times since my surgery.

Best wishes!

Weiser that is good to know. I read so much about the ovaries conking out soon after surgery, that almost daily I am waiting for them to give me a sign! My doc said even with ovaries in, I would hit menopause earlier than average, just due to having the hysterectomy.
Nine years post op sounds great to me!

Re: How long will my ovaries continue to work?

None of us know for sure how long our ovaries will continue to function and keep us out of menopause...my mother had a hyst with ovaries removed so I can't go by her....my sister is 52 and still having periods. I'm 46 now and hoping I end up like her. But we just never know for sure....I'm just glad I will be able to go through natural menopause now unstead of surgical. Even if it's just one year or two, it's still worth it to me to keep my ovaries.

Oh I absolutely agree. It was suggested to me that as I'm very very nearly 45, I might want to have them out anyway, together with my useless, non-functional cervix , and I declined.Loudly, and won. Periods at 52, lordy, that is one of the reasons I wanted a hyst -the thought of another 10 years of agonising ones......anyway I just hope they keep me going for as long as possible!
