Hair loss?
Since my tah hysterectomy I have been loosing heaps of hair. My shower and bathroom is covered in it. I kept my ovaries and so far I feel like they are working fine. Could this be hormone related?

Re: Hair loss?
I had TAH/BSO and didn't keep anything. My hair loss is terrible! My dr told me to get a super b complex vitamin and it would help. It's still coming out a lot but not nearly as bad as before.

Re: Hair loss?
Quite a few of us lose hair after a hysterectomy. Here is an article that can help explain: https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/article_536924.htm. I lost quite a bit of hair after my hysterectomy. Fortunately, it grew back!

Re: Hair loss?
I'm only 10 days out, but I did notice my pony tail is very thin. I always had very thick hair and I guess I was pretty vane about it. Almost the only thing I liked about my appearance. I hope it will get some if it back eventually.

Re: Hair loss?
My hair and nails went very fine/brittle after my TAH. I think it's just our bodies concentrating on healing and so things like hair and nails suffer! I had my hair cut into a cute bob to try to get some of the thickness back. Thankfully the hair loss just seems temporary

Re: Hair loss?
My hair has thinned out a lot. My skin is extra dry and my fingernails are just breaking off and are very brittle. This did not happen to me when/after I went through menopause. It didn't happen after any of my major surgeries (back/neck/appendix), so I am sure it is not the anesthesia. Does anyone with a total hysterectomy ever get normal hair growth and nail health back, ever??

Re: Hair loss?
Hi sisters, for me hair loss was due to post- menopause and stress! To quote my dermatologist: when the body is under stress it stops its nonessential funtions, hair and nail growth! TAH certainly qualifies! My nurse practitioner suggested prenatal vitamins, but I have had the best luck with female monoxidil solution and biotin vitamins that he recommended. If you shop online you can get it for half price from some of the big retailers!

Re: Hair loss?
I cannot find the thread, it's a little old, but some sisters found that their hair did much better when they were taking Evening Primrose Oil. I'll keep looking. My hair didn't fall out so much immediately after surgery, if I recall it took me until week three or four to notice. It grew back in all by itself. Then I had another episode of it falling out at about 4 or 5 months, then it grew back, now it's not doing so well again. My guess from all that is that for me, it's stress and hormones. I can't untangle the two. Just a note, I tried evening primrose oil early post op in my desire to find ANYTHING to stop the hotflashes. Apparently, it didn't go well with the hormones I was using at the time, or maybe my body just wasn't ready for it. It doesn't bother me now. Hopefully it works, I don't like looking bedraggled!

Hair loss?
I am 6 weeks post op and still having major hair loss but mine is due to iron deficiency from surgery. I am on iron pills for the next 2 months. This is normal. I had the same thing happen when I had a myomectomy 8 yrs ago. Takes a while for our bodies to get back to "normal" after major surgery.
I wish you all the best of luck xox
Although I am still trying to cope with the reality of this psychologically it has been the best thing that has happened to me physically. I feel absolutely amazing so that is helping me get through the harder emotional days
