Getting in shape for recovery.
Hi there,
I have been through 7 surgeries and more drugs / treatments than I can count in the last 10 years and have finally been granted my dearest wish - a hysterectomy.
On 20 Oct I will be having a LAVH and excision of endometriosis (hopefully simple but it is showing very close to my ureter and bowel so fingers crossed...). I'm also keeping my ovaries. I have developed an immunity over time to painkillers, even the strong ones, so am looking forward to a life without pain. And I can stop my hormones...
I have always recovered well from my surgeries, after the last laparoscopic excision of endo I was back at work on day 3. Yes I know i'm insane.
This surgery will be a little more involved and I know that I need to take more time this time - but I'd like to get myself into as good a shape both mentally and physically as I can before hand to make it easier on me.
What I'm looking for (i think) is advice on ways to prepare for the surgery and recovery timeframes. My Dr is encouraging and she and I both believe I won't be in hospital or staying home long.
I'm a big woman and have already started to change my diet and want to work on maybe losing a few pounds if I can, or trying to strengthen my core.

Getting in shape for recovery.
Changing you diet is a good idea, also start walking it is something that will be very helpful in healing. Check out the information on this site about getting your room ready and what to take to the hospital (really don't need much). Use the time to prepare you home so you can rest when you are at home. And please don't try to do to much, use your recovery time to relax and recover even if you think you don't need the time remember that things inside have to heal. Listen to dr instructions they aren't telling us to rest because they want to but because they know what we do need.
Good luck and best wishes for a speedy recovery

Getting in shape for recovery.
It is a good idea to get in shape before your surgery. Especially strengthening your core and the walking to build your stamina. I am absolutely sure that my recovery went so well because I was in excellent shape.

Getting in shape for recovery.
I have been doing Pilates, which has been so wonderful for strengthening my core, and my pelvic floor (I have prolapse issues). I have also started walking each night. Doing these things along with changing my diet, I have lost 7 pounds so far in 6 weeks. My surgery is 12 dasy away, so we will see if it helped. I can say that I feel better than I have in a long time. I can't wait for life post-op!

I just wanted to say thanks to all for your advice.
Walking is a definite, and a bonus is that my SO can come with me as he is not working due to major back issues - it'll benefit us both.
I've just been to talk to my local gym and they have offered to assist with a few bonus pilates / yoga sessions to help with the core strengthening.
As for the diet changes, so far they're easier than I thought. But then it is spring here and I adore spring fruit
