LAVH if you haven't had kids?

Hi ladies,

I was wondering if anyone has had an LAVH with or without ovary removal and has never had children? My gyn had suggested this as an out-patient procedure, but I had read elsewhere that if you haven't had children then it would be harder to do it this way. Something about the ligaments not being stretched enough so that it's hard to remove the uterus through them. Did I just get some bad info? I'm just really scared of some type of nerve damage and loss of sensation after this. Any help you could give would really be appreciated!

Thanks,
selene

My doctor won't do any type of vaginal hyst if you haven't had kids.

Re: LAVH if you haven't had kids?

I had a LAVH in March of this year...I have never had children. I did have to stay an extra day in the hospital, and did suffer from an arterial bleed. My doctor removed the left ovary, but was able to save the right one. I didn't suffer from too much pain after the surgery. The hardest part has been balancing the hormones (that right ovary just isn't doing its job!)

Hope all goes well.

Re: LAVH if you haven't had kids?

With a LAVH they do all of the disconnecting and surgery through the tummy incisions and then pull the disconnected uterus out of the vagina. With a vaginal hysterectomy (TVH) they do the whole operation through the vagina so that procedure is where space would be more of a concern. I am having a TLH, which maybe they will pull stuff out through my vagina, I have no idea, but I did choose not to have it all done vaginally as the doc wants to be able to look around in there at the same time. So basically, your surgery and mine would be the same, the only difference is how they pull the disconnected things out. Best of luck to you!

Re: LAVH if you haven't had kids?

More doctors are performing LAVH on women that have not had vaginal births. It depends upon the size of the uterus, the integrity of the pelvic floor as well as surgeon experience. It is possible but continue to research and ask questions so you can be prepared to question your doctor and make the decision that is right for you. Often doctors will recommend the type of surgery they are most comfortable with. You as the patient need to be confident in the procedure choice and trust the doctors ability. Best way to do that is to educate yourself and research the doctor.

Re: LAVH if you haven't had kids?

Thank you all for your help! I'll definitely ask my doctor about this and do a bit more reading on my own. It never hurts to have too much info. I may even ask his surgical scheduling nurse how many of these he's performed.

Thanks again!

Re: LAVH if you haven't had kids?

I had a LAVH/BSO and had never delivered any children vaginally nor had any pregnancies to term. It depends on the doctor and your body.
