What is SAH and TAH?

My status said SAH. I had an abdominal hysterectomy so what's the difference between those terms?

The terms and abbreviations are the first post in the thread, stating, "Abbreviations used here and hints on where to post."

Re: What is SAH and TAH?

I think the difference is with a TAH its abdominal and they take the whole uterus and cervix an SAH is abdominal and they take a partial uterus or no cervix.

Re: What is SAH and TAH?

TAH = total abdominal hysterectomy, where they take all of the organs (uterus, tubes, ovaries). SAH = supracervical abdominal hysterectomy. They leave in the cervix, primarily for sexual sensation. In my case, I had an SAH where he left the cervix, and my ovaries. Hope that helps!

Re: What is SAH and TAH?

The term TAH doesn't include the tubes and ovaries. It means they went in abdominally and removed the entire uterus. Subtotal Abdominal Hystorectomy SAH, means they went in abdominally but left the cervix and supporting structures. Unless there is RSO LSO or BSO attached to the surgery, ovaries don't have anything to do with it.

SAH stands for supracervical or subtotal abdominal hysterectomy, where only the uterus is removed.

TAH stands for total abdominal hysterectomy, where the uterus and cervix are removed.

The ovaries aren't included in a hysterectomy, although it is common to remove one or both, at the same time, if required. Removal of both ovaries and tubes is known as a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, or BSO.

You’ll find a list of abbreviations used on this site by clicking on the "Quick Links" tab, on the right of the purple bar towards the top of every page, or by clicking here.

Hope this helps!
