6 days post hysterectomy - Suspect UTI-tips to fight it off

I was thinking having a UTI was pretty common after a hysterectomy. I am 6 days out from surgery, with my 2 week post - op check July 1. I have had no problems urinating since my surgery.....that is, until today. Today I have had more urgency with going, seems like more trouble fully emptying, and some discomfort downstairs. Earlier today, I had some itchiness, but at first thought it was just the first signs of healing taking place.
I guess my question is, what else can I do (besides lots of water, cranberry juice, Advil) to ward off a UTI (or keep it from getting really bad) until my appointment??

Re: Suspect UTI-tips to fight it off

I am having the same. Was thinking about going into the family Dr. For a urinalysis. Drinking lots of water and that's about it. I mentioned it to my Dr. On my two week checkup. At that time I ate yogurt, and had a beer. He laughed. My symptoms went away for weeks. Might try that again. At different sittings. That would be gross to have them together. If it doesn't work. Family Dr. For me.

I wouldn't play around with it. I am 13 days post, had one at 6 days post, was on meds for 3 days, still felt lousy, and they had to up my meds. Just went to my primary care doc for that. The kicker for me was a temp and chills.

On round 2 here. They do sell testing kits at the drugstore now, if you aren't sure and just want to check to see if you need to call the doc right away. I think you are doing what you can, really.

Re: Suspect UTI-tips to fight it off

I've my first one too at 11 wks post op. The testing strips are great as they help confirm whether you need to get an appointment with Dr. To be honest if it's going to develop I think it will no matter what you do but lots of water is definitely a good idea. Also if you're testing a sample make sure it's first thing in the morning as sometimes a sample later in the day won't show the bacteria on the dipstick tests.

Re: Suspect UTI-tips to fight it off

Thanks to all of you!! I forgot about yogurt, and also the home testing kits. No fever/chills.....yet.....hopefully I can fend this thing off. I figured I was mostly doing everything I could.....just wanted some 'back-up' advice.
Much appreciated!
