Dieting During Hysterectomy Recovery?
Hello! I had a LAVH on 10/26. Since then I haven't had any nausea or vomiting. My appetite has been normal. Today (10/29) I stepped on the scale and saw I gained 3 lbs! I was already a bit overweight before surgery: my dr loaded me up with hormonal BC that caused a lot of weight gain. I have been making sure to eat something before I take any of my medication (like a piece of bread or crackers), which means I'm eating every 4-6 hours. But I don't want to gain any more weight. Do you all have any suggestion for foods I can eat with my meds that are healthy alternatives? And I know it's' probably not a good idea to "diet" while recovering but I do want to stave off any weight gain. Do you have any tips to help me do that? Thanks in advance, all of the advice here has been super helpful!

Re: Dieting During Recovery?
You think you gained 3 lbs? Heck, I got home from the hospital three days after surgery, stepped on the scale and had apparently gained 17 lbs! It was all fluid and pee'd itself out over the next few days.
Honestly, recovery is not the time to worry about weight gain. Don't eat lots of junk, but as long as what you're eating is reasonably healthy, don't worry about it. Your body needs energy to heal.
How about a piece of fruit or some yogurt with your meds instead of bread or crackers?

First, don't step on the scales post-op. You are likely retaining fluid from all your internal incisions. You know how when you have a sprain or burn tissues around it retain fluid and swell? That's what happens to many of us, and since the "injuries" are internal, that's where the inflammation is, and also where the fluid retention will be.
Second, if 3 pounds is all you gained, count your blessings ! Best thing to do is make healthy food choices. Make sure you get lean protein, dark leafy veggies, fruits (dried, fresh, frozen), nuts seeds, whole grains and plenty of water. I agree with Surprised, forego highly processed foods and choose fruits or yogurt or a hard boiled egg instead. All this will help your body nourish itself for healing, and have the added benefit of keeping your digestive system going
Nah, I wouldn't "diet" - I'd rest and heal.

You should focus on healing but healing should come with wise food choices. For me I stay away from wheat. Lots of veggies and snack with fruit. Berries and apples are great choices and drink lots of water. I try to make sure to eat plenty of veggies in the morning with an egg, either cooked or hard boiled. Hope this helps a little.
